Remember when they really tried to learn the language and were proud when they could communicate fairly well in english??? My what a difference 20-30 years makes.
My family sponsored a family of 17 Vietnamese back in the early 70's. We gave them a place to live and every one that could, went out and worked doing something. They did their best to learn english and assimilate into American society. They kept their own traditions of course, but they were glad to be in America.
It was tough for them for a while, but they saved as much as they could and bought a house when they could. They tried many times to give my parents money, but they wouldn't take any. So, every time my birthday rolled around, I got cash from the father. He would give it to me all secret like, away from my parents and tell me to save it.
That family has done pretty well for themselves. Several of the kids went on to college. I think one or two of them own their own businesses. I don't ever remember any of them crying about wanting any special rights. They were fleeing a country where they had very little individual rights, and no rights if the gov't saw fit to take them away. They were happy as hell to be somewhere where they had a fair chance like everyone else.
What the fuck has happened to that America?
