Does nicotine, i.e. Chewing tobacco, really deplete vitamin C...?

...and other vitamin intake?

Not sure where else to post this. Hope this is the right place. Been a question on my mind for awhile. Yeah, I chew,..been a bad habit of mine for quite awhile. Was told years ago it depletes vitamin C. So for the past few years I've been taking an extra 1000 MG of vitamin C before bed, and that on top of the fruit I eat and multi vitamin I take every morning.

Never do get sick and am over-all pretty healthy. Just been a question I never had factually answered.

Here's an excerpt from my textbook copywrite 2004:

"Because of the oxidative stress caused by smoking, the Food and Nutrition Board also recommends that smokers consume 35 mg more vitamin C per day than the DRI intake level set for their age and sex (DRI for males is 90mg, 75mg for females)."

Keep in mind this refers specifically to smoking, not chewing tobacco. I assume it has to do with the nicotine.

I say if your taking an extra gram a day your covering all bases.

No, never said that at all. I was just saying that I thought the oxidative stress was related to the nicotine.

The stress of smoking or chewing tobacco depletes the body of some vitamins. Nicotine by itself is a stimulant and appetite supressant
