Does Good Come From God?

Lane Craig debates Sam Harris....

Craig is probably the best at delivering the theist argument via philosophy; It might bring up your spirit pick....

i think that the philosophy of good and god is tied in with the elementary practice of preaching and teaching and reaching and leaching and screeching and checking and chilling and charging and changing and champion and onion

great videos

Craig has always made a good case, from philosophy, but he has been using the same arguments since the 1980's. The Hitchens Vs. Craig debate was highly publicized but Hitchens doesn't have the philosophical background to refute his arguments and I found it disappointing. I thought this debate was good because Sam Harris is a neuroscientist as opposed to a journalist.

LOL @ posting 2 hours worth of youtubes in one thread and expecting anyone to watch it.

this is chat, no one here has that kind of attention span.

I'm pretty sure it was you refusing to watch Apocalypse Now Redux...I watched it three times this weekend...

Watch it and you might get inside my head a little bit...I read the short story "Heart of Darkness" in college and it was one of those "I get it" moments for me....

Maybe if you hadn't have said that you would have enjoyed watching jesus getting his ass beat for fun I would have watched it!

Yeah! I love the part when Kurtz admits the NVA were stronger than the Army.... Typical Army Brass, exploiting their men, then trying to jam them up for how they get the job done. Kurtz's problem was he left witnesses alive. If he was a Marine there would not have been any witnesses to tell anything.... What do you get? "That life is nothing but a lie."
With a bang and a whimper, and with a whimper i'm splitting Jack! Read, "The Hollow Man," maybe, that will make you feel better...

god actually comes from good. See? Just take one "O" out of good = god.

I miss the times when AAP would get involved in the religion debates.

Where's Lestat anyway?

God does more evil than Satan.

I like to point out that government has done more evil than any corporation. For some reason, demonizing the free market is popular even though the free market is more democratic than any government.

Again, there is some truth to what you're saying. However, go back to the first 50-80 years of the Industrial Revolution, and look at some of the evil the big corporations did. Ie. Carnegie, Rockefellar, Morgan, Gould. Everyone of these men were nothing but "totalitarians." They're the ones that spawned "labor union" (which I hate) and goverment regulation on businesses, anti-trust laws, and minimum wage (maybe all unconstitutional). As for goverment being evil, I believe it depends on what administration you're talking about. Wilson, FDR, LBJ, Hoover, were all dictators of course in the name of democracy.

There are really only two presidents worth anything since Lincoln. Calvin Coolidge 1922-1928. Coolidge never gets any respect, actually the majority of Americans never even heard of him. There was 2.5 to 3% unemployment during the 20's. Real income rose 35-40% while he was in office. The GNP grew 7-9% a year during the 20's, 1% inflation during his tenure. The highest income tax bracket was 22% the lowest was 0.5%. He left office with a huge surplus, which Hoover squandered. Henry Ford lowered his price on his Model T from $3,000 to $300 by 1928 80% Americans owned cars. Prior to Coolidge, 20% Americans owned cars. Using cars as an example is important because building them requires all different types of material. Hence, enhancing almost all industy.

While in office, Congress tried to socialize farming two or three times, Coolidge vetoed the bills everytime( which was brilliant). Remember what Hoover and Roosevelt did to farming (socialized it). Which we are still feeling the effects of their policy today. Paying farmers not to produce (subsidies).
Which only benefits big farmers, the small farmer is still getting a raw deal. Argueably, you could blame them two for our trade deficit or certainly attribute them for starting it.

Coolidge had impeccable diplomacy skills. America was on the verge of going to war with Mexico, he made them our ally. The man is barely mentioned in text books, which I find retarded....He is your "free market" guy.

The other president, well..... another time or day, but ya know! The Great Communicator....

Evil = terrible things

Ok....Explain to me, if you would sir, how you came up with the assumption that God does more evil than the Devil? "Terrible things" can be perceived differently from everyone.

Or how evil can exist without a god or gods

Exactly.... IMO,man does not have the innate ability to conjure up good or evil without some unforseen entity. The dynamics of nature and physics do not add up when it comes to influencing emotions and actions. Inanimate objects do not have emotions. I don't know about you, but I never seen a tree cry or a mountain commit premeditated murder.

When an innocent child dies, what does everyone say? Satan took your baby? No, they say "God needed an angel".

When someone find out they or their loved ones have cancer or some incurable disease do they say Satan is attacking me? No they say "God is testing me".

When someone goes through serious physical, mental or emotional trauma and their lives are never the same do they say Satan fucked me over? No they say "God works in mysterious ways".

Has Satan ever killed all his children?

That's ridiculous. No one speaks like that lol if they do...ignore them. You don't become an angel when you die lol

Christians speak like that all the time.

Don't worry, I already ignore them.

I don't get it? You're arguing good and evil can't exist without gods? How so?

I already gave my position. How do you discern good from evil? was my question, so how do you? Where does good and evil come from? Everyone has their own take on this subject. Scientists believe
"the big bank theory," a huge explosion occurred in space, and we were formed from atoms and evolved from stage to stage into human form. However, why do humans have emotions and inanimated objects do not? My point is, there had to be a primordial-mystical influence wrought in humans that seperates them from the rest of the evolution process.

Really. Logically and without moral absolutes...it can't.

That's not logical. Humans are rational enough to come up with guidelines to follow without the presence of religion. Murder, theft, etc..those are all things that have negative effects on organized civilizations, so we couldcome to the conclusion that those things are wrong or right without the help of any type of god.

We're capable of creating moral absolutes without religion. Athiests know right from wrong or good from evil without believing in god or an evil counterpart, no?

I'm not saying that people can't tell right from wrong...I never said that.

Religion and god don't equal the same thing so you gotta quit lumping them together.

I'm on the tail end of my vacation and it sucks to type more than a couple sentences on this iPad. Maybe I'll finish when i get home later this wkend

Bro, come on....you just spoke for the whole world! This is typical Christian dogma you're speaking.... You're beating youself at your own game. Did God kill all his children? Anyway, you failed to answer my question, what is the definition of evil? Your take on evil might not be what others believe.
What you think is evil someone else might think is good. It is all idealism.

annie will not be capitalized until she gives me what I seek!

and it's awaits when i'm using it in the 3rd person dipshit.

"miplank patiently awaits annie's reply"

await |əˈwāt|
verb [ trans. ]
(of a person) wait for (an event) : we await the proposals with impatience | prisoners awaiting trial | [as adj., with submodifier ] ( awaited) an eagerly awaited debut.
• (of an event or circumstance) be in store for (someone) : many dangers await them.

Sorry! it is a little late to change up, fuck head. Never try to correct me. You're not worthy to be on the same thread as me. Now go blow SB, and I'll bend your gross ass wife over. No, wait a minute, she's not worthy either. Now, we know why you have the need to try to correct everyone, you have low self-esteem. It was a nice try though....But a little late.

Anyway, you look totally retarded! You correct people that write paragraphs and find one typo. You wrote a five word sentence, and I found two grammatical errors, and your syntax is horrible. Which you spent four hours trying to correct, and your definition confirmed that I was right. You used that word wrong. Also, we do not use (it's). The correct form is (it is), and you need a comma between (person, dipshit). Stupid....

I never said gods and the religions that surround them were the same thing, and I use the terms when I mean to. I was going to write about that just now, but it doesn't really have to do with this specific argument so I'll save it for another time. :qt: lol

Anyways, my point is just that you may not realize it, but you're projecting your beliefs on others here. Your god is your moral absolute, so I can agree that to you good and evil exist measured by the 'good' standard of your god. But your god, or more importantly any god at all, isn't everybody's moral absolute.

Buddhism has been around longer than Christianity and Buddhists don't believe in a god or gods. The original Buddha did not believe in a 'creator' and believed thoughts of a supreme being were a waste of time that could have been spent reaching nirvana.

Buddha also is not and never claimed to be a god, and his followers do not believe in one, but they have clear distinctions and ideas between good and evil and also clear paths to get to either extreme. A god is not their moral absolute, a plain man who lived a good life is, and that is how the measure and define good and evil.

Abstract ideas like good and evil exist with or without a god, maybe not for you, but in general definitely.

I already defined evil.

Yes, God killed all his children. 99.99999999999% of them.

If you don't, then what makes you think a god is necessary for good and evil?
