Do you go w/ your instincts or are you logical when making a decision?

Most people think that choice is good. After all, we associate choice with autonomy, control, independence and desirable outcomes. In reality, however, this is not the case. As Schwartz emphasizes, too many choices actually lead to less happiness, a lower sense of control, and even paralysis. And this is the paradox he addresses: we think we want more choices, but when we have more options we are, in general, less satisfied.
Second, we are plagued by regret, considering options we did not choose. If I take a job with a good salary, I might regret not taking the job with the better location. I might even regret not waiting for a hypothetical job that has both good location and good salary. All the other possibilities diminish from my pleasure in my choice.

Third, humans have a remarkable ability to adapt to whatever situation we are in so that a decision that is originally exciting gradually becomes normal, leaving us again unsatisfied with our choice. I might get a new wonderful computer, but after a few years, even though my computer needs have not really changed and the computer still works well, my expectations about what my computer should do for me have changed. I am no longer satisfied with my computer and my choice to buy it seems bad.

And finally, we are constantly comparing ourselves to those around us, sizing up our choices against those of others. There is always someone with a better outcome. Getting a B+ on a hard exam can seem great if everyone else failed the exam, but the same grade feels like a failure if the rest of the class got As.

I recently made a decision that I feel is for the best. Nothing major. I'm not ready to deal with the potential "what ifs" and if I'm wrong, well then so be it. My gut told me something wasn't right and I went with that feeling.

What do you do? Do you go with your instincts or do you analyze the situation and then decide? Any regrets?

Each of us has the ability to tap into our own resources and make choices and decisions about our lives. The best resource we have is our gut instinct. This instinct is our inner physical and emotional reactions to the world around us. It’s that inner voice that speaks to us. It’s our intuition.

So often we believe that these instincts are not valuable, or legitimate and we so often ignore them and reject them. We so often allow the brain to question the feelings of the gut and to convince ourselves that the gut is wrong. The brain likes to ask questions like “What if”, “Why”, “How” and as a result will devalue the signals given by the gut.

The gut instinct is your initial, honest perceptions and reactions to things. It can provide you with a multitude of information like:
Whether or not someone is worthy of your trust;
Whether it’s safe to be around someone or in a particular situation;
Whether a person is being honest or deceptive.
Your instinct can tell you whether the suggestions given to you by others are the right ones for you.
It can also tell you if the decisions and choices you make with your brain are the right choices for you.

More times than not, the gut instinct is right. The challenge is to allow yourself to be open to it and to trust in its ability.

my instincts are rooted in logic

I guess I'm the same way. It's been awhile since I have been in this situation so my guard is definitely up. There were things said and/or done that did not make sense - something wasn't right.

Eventually you can justify any decision to yourself. Your first reaction is usually the best for you, but not always. I like to interpret my "gut" reaction with logic, reason, and experience.
