(debate for the ages) Muay Thai or TKD?

Big Rick Rock

What is best? and what do you base your opinion on?

Thai. Easlily. No forms. More sparring. The low kicks to the inner & outer Quads would cripple probably any TKD fighter that wasn't conditioned for one.

I personally prefer muay thai as a fighting art, TKD is more spiritual, yes you can be a good fighter with TKD but I think the more sparring time and agressive background of MT is better for fighting.

I make this basis on sparring a TKD and a MT in a practice where almost everything was allowed (no biting, headbuts, eye gouging ect...) the TKD guy was pretty tough on the outside so I had to just wait for him to initiate first and then I went for a Takedown and end up using elbow to finish it. NOt full elbows but basic taps (friend was opponent). The MT guy was much harder to shoot in on but lagged on punching. Fucker caught me witha knee though ;(. But close inside I just went for a lock and sweep and choke out on ground.

Both are well accomplished in their field and if I had to fight using their rules I would have been beaten easily, but thank god it wasn't

I was going to direct you to that clip, BRR.

TKD is way too one sided of an art.
What would a TKD guy do if someone tied him up and had him in the clinch?
What if someone took him to the ground?

TKD relies on the fight being over within one or two kicks or punches, but not everyone who trains TKD has the power to imobilize someone with one or two kicks, or the accuracy to connect on the chin or temple which are key KO points.

and if your fighting a experienced MT guy or BJJ guy then you better be able to take him out within the first few strikes b/c thats all the time they need to be able to tie you up in a clinch or take you to the ground.
I think theres too much flashiness in TKD, too many spinning kicks and flying kicks that are better kept in the movies then in a self defense situation.

what about san shou?

Thats a good one. The two are so similar that I believe the one who got the best blow in to set up for either the Thai throw or the San Shou suplex would fair better. But the suplex would be the more devastating.

TKD vs Thai-

I'll throw this at you- how many UFC type fighters use TKD in the octagon? Or K-1 even?

The TKD guys who come to us usually pull off a spinning back kick or two. But they usually land without force or conviction .Then, they get their ass handed to them. A few of them have been Olympic team finalists or hopefuls. In the clinch, it's like fighting a noodle dancing rag doll.

Gawd, that was a pathetic display by the TKD dude. Maybe if he had taken off his godamn dress, and remembered he has two fists he would have done better. Karma for the nice vid, BRR.

There's no question on the praticality of Muai Thai vs TKD; I train TKD, and love it, but it sure as hell doesn't stand up versus other martial arts. In saying that, not all schools of TKD are the same. A lot are olympic-oriented; they train for the "foot-tag" type competition, which I believe is more of a WTF style. My TKD school is more traditional, and is actually similar to the shito-ryu style of karate I took as a teen.
