Ok so a few weeks ago I got up to 370x5 reps, pretty happy with that, next week I got 4 reps...week after 2, so I decided to take a break after 5 months of lifting. I took 2 week off before I did deadlifts again. Today I did them, I usually do 135,225,315,350(in todays case) for 6 reps, i got to my third set(315) and it was hard to get 6!?!?! I didn't even end up doing the fourth set, can someone PLEASE HELP!

recovery is always an issue with the lower back. did you train yesterday? was it intense? eating well? i usually DL every 10-14 days.

I would try to carb load next time you go in the gym. It seems I have so much more stamina to deadlift and/or squat when I eat a carb loaded dinner the night before. Just a thought...

Lot of good replies up in here.

Unless it's simply an issue of local fatigue like HT suggested, I'd say you probably pushed too far into overtraining and then botched your recovery period. From the fact that your reps went from 5 to 4 to 2 reps, it sounds like you buried yourself pretty nicely.

What else did you do during the two weeks when you didn't do deads? If you were still trying to push hard on your other lifts, you've found your problem. Even without deads, your CNS isn't going to recover if you're trying to go balls-to-the-wall on squats, bench, and the rest of your lifts.

Thanks for the reply. I actualy took 8 days off then I did chest and tris, took another day off then legs, day off, then back again, so it was a total of 12 days without deads.

I have to imagine your problems form the break.

As you hit 375x5 you were probably pushing into overtraining. Your next few attempts were in a status of overtrained. In my case, a complete stop is the worse thing to do. I suggest instead that you still workout but with lighter weight. Go down like 10% and if that doesn't work go down like 20%.

It happens man... even short layoffs can be surprisingly effective at screwing up your poundages. A short layoff followed by deadlifting almost caused me to herniate a lumbar disc and forced me to stop lifting for 3 months while I recovered.

Just take it slow and give it a few weeks to get back to where you need to be. You'll still look like a beast with all that iron on your back bending the bar anyway.
