Deadlifting Question.

Quick question: What's a good deadlift weight for a 178 lber? Not like insane powerlifting deadlift, just a good deadlift benchmark I should be shooting for.

1.5 x your body weight is a good place to start

27 bro. I pulled 405 yesterday for my 1RM and it felt good. Only problem I had was when I got it to the top and locked out I could only hold it for a second because my left hand grip started failing and I could feel the callous under my middle finger starting to rip off, so i let it down. I definitely got that bitch up there though and it felt awesome.

nice, 405 is what i was going to say. 99% of gym goers couldnt budge that. Do you use any chalk? Thatll help the grip out big time.

haha same situation for me - I maxed out at 385 two days ago and my left hand grip was giving out at the top. By the time I lowered the weight i was barely hanging on by my fingertips. the weight honestly didn't seem that heavy.. just the grip..

i need chalk but i don't even know if my gym would allow that :p

edit: i cant spell gud

Thanks bro, I'm nowhere near your power and probably won't ever get there but I'm going to keep hitting it.

As for the chalk, the gym doesn't even have any! The place seems to be more of a "fitness center" than a hardcore gym, so the free weight area isn't very large and theres no chalk or anything like that. I refuse to use straps though, I might look into getting my own chalk.

Are you still competing Dave?

Exactly the same with the fitness centre approach for my gym. They have the basic free weight stuff, and alot of machines but they dont have a preacher bench or chalk or bands or anything. But anyway, im 14 and pull 220for 6 reps. BW of 160.

That makes me feel a bit better. I've just decided to throw out T-bar and rows for awhile and concentrate on DL's to build up some basic core strength. I did 1.5 bw x 5 on my first serious
DL session. 2x bw is going to take some doing though. I don't intend to drop reps below 5.

As long as you are truly giving it your best...you can be happy!
