"cultural accents"

Sub-Zero

what is it with certain sects of society developing accents, that arnt based on location or speaking another language?

examples:
Black people accent
Gay people accent
Dumb blonde accent

can any linguists explain this to me? thanks

I'm guessing it's part of their collective identity, kinda like rednecks and dipping.

did you see jon benjamin has a van where he gets bit by the gay and catches the gay?

does the accent spread through saliva?

I watched his show long enough to see some distasteful skit on disabled veterans and thought to myself: "fuck this guy". I haven't watched him since.

I loooooove disrespectful humor, but if he wants to rip on vets I'll just change the channel.

are you a vet plunkey?

No, but I have an intense loyalty to vets.

For starters, we should let them vote at least three times each. I don't argue politics with vets. I may think they are dead wrong, but it's like arguing abortion with someone who has adopted five kids -- they've put their money where their mouth is.

I feel the same way about Jesus.

Irregardless of my personal beliefs, the disrespect of using a deity considered by many (to include family and friends) as their lord and savior as a punch line doesn't work for me.

just sayin'

I have a similar streak. Religion served a purpose in our development and it's pure folly to think we can just shirk it off without consequences.

I'll also admit I sometimes can't resist a religious joke though.

you can't count on my support if you venture into a career in the comedic arts

Odd how I find some material offensive [even in the context of a comedy skit] without any particular religious ties and yet can effortless cast repeated aspersions upon your sechual orientation without experiencing any moral anguish

Yup. It's odd to me how some specific things can touch a nerve.

I really don't like anything that is pejorative toward veterans.

Religious jokes bother me because I know religion plays a role in society, but I can't personally connect with it (I'm an atheist).

I think gay jokes are fair game to me because of the cultural push that some gay activists have employed. I know there are evangelical Christians out there, but the atheists and gays seem far more evangelical (at least in my own experience).

agreed

unless the punch line involves "PICK3's o-ring"

(original topic); I think it's just upbringing and how people speak in certain parts of the country. When referring to the "Black" dialect or accent, I can't help wondering if that's because in the times when Black people started to learn English in the USA's South, the population was mainly French-ancestry, whereas the Northern states were mainly of British ancestry. Only a guess....

I hear radically different accents among people from the East Coast to the Midwest to the Pacific Northwest to the Desert Southwest to Texas to the Deep South. Very distinct differences!

I have a Cali-sylvania accent.... Family from Philadelphia but I was born & raised in Los Angeles. Nobody can figure my accent out, and they often ask where I'm from. Strangely, that's only in Los Angeles that I hear that!!! But I guess they must notice it in Dallas when I say I need to go warsh my hands before supper, and I exclaim "Duuude!!" when somebody says something extreme. And nobody in CA knows what I mean when I ask for milk. They know it as "Melk".

I think there must be some kind of Gay Mentor Program where old queens teach you how to do the lisp and the walk when you first come out.
