Grappling is great for UFC fights. In a street fight with 5 guys... 4 of them are not going to politely wait to the side while you wrestle their friend into submission. They are going to kick you in the head again and again while you roll around on the ground trying to get a choke or mount going.

Grapling is not the best choice if you have to face more than one person. This is why most of the top BJJ guys are also excellent boxers.

The best man at my wedding dropped 5 guys in a bar fight. He studied boxing originally... added kick boxing and BJJ later. One of the 5 guys he fought that night was a black belt in karate... one of the rare times you go up against a trained fighter.

If he'd tried to take that guy to the ground he'd be dead.

Boxers have endurance...that's it.....I challenge anyone who is an amateur or pro boxer to last more than 3 minutes with me even with the aforementioned endurance......striking arts, and grappling arts combined make for the most effective combo, I spar with kickboxers all the time.....point sports suck.....period......I have a background not unlike sofa's.....started with tae kwan do.....and muay thai.....progressed to Kenpo, where I studied until I was a second degree balck belt, then moved to the darkside with a friend Rodrigo, who trained in the Gracie compound for 11 years......combat hapkido , and BJJ are two most effective forms of grappling, those coupled with kenpo's strikes produce the most effective lethal combo IMO.....but we are off the topic of the thread....you say you felt powerless....well there isn't an art out there that will make you bullet proof, so all in all I say you did the smart thing.....train if you like, it will do wonders for your confidence, can't say I am in favor of the gun toting citizen....but if it makes ya feel better that's your right....

When faced with 5 on 1 odds, there is not a man on this board that will guilty for throwing a sucker punch. And that is what you do. You got put that fucker on the floor, lights out. Hit and run. Once he hits the ground, you can whatever the fuck you want to with him. A good thing is stepping on his lips and twisting your foot a half turn.
