Cardio on empty stomach?

I put this on the diet board too, but I am curious how many of you swear by this for fat loss? The other side of the coin is muscle catabolism, but I am going to give this a shot and say what the hell.
 
Yep! Me too -a fast during the night 12-hrs followed by morning cardio does a hatchet job on fat!

Personally i don't think you need anything in your stomach at that time ,that the body can use for fuel ,remember you want the body to dip into those fats stores for fuel!

BCAA and water bro, no calories...just gives you a little positive nitro w/out any food fuel. I don't know, I personally will never do cardio again w/out taking BCAA in the am w/cardio..big diff. for me

I have found that using yes and cardio breeze before your morning cardio gives you better results also.
 
I'm so friggin weak and sluggish in the morning. I've tried it for a couple weeks. It seems like I just walk for the 25 min then lightly sprint on/off during the last 20 minutes (only because I know it will be all over soon! lol). I can't stomach stimulants on an empty stomach either. Plus stimulants or "fat-burners" are catabolic. I also sit there and think about all the shit I have to get done that day and it pyschs me out a bit.

So my experience with morning cardio isn't good. I do it when I can. If I can't I do afternoon/evening cardio. I always wait at least 2 hours after eating.

Yeah. Like most said,morning cardio is the best. I recently changed to doing it right after I wake and have seen a big difference on results and I feel more energized all day. Next best time is after lifting but man it is a bitch to do.

I swapped to AM cardio 3 weeks ago on an empty stomach and have dropped my bodyfat by 6-7% already. I use YES before I do cardio. I have only used it for 8 days but I think it is effective. How long should you wait before eating after cardio. I usually eat 1 1/2 cups of oatmeal and 2 scoops of whey about an hour after getting off the treadmill.

Oh yeah I am on Tren, Prop and Winny - that stuff helps a little too.

Crank some Metallica or Slayer and get to it, you can't not get fired up listening to some good metal, at least i can't, get's my adrenaline flowing like a bat out of hell. :evil:
 
From personal experience....morning cardio is the way to go! i used to do cardio in the afternoon or cardio right after or before training....but when i started doing cardio in the AM on an empty tank, i saw a HUGE difference....the only way to go IMO.
 
The first thing i'm buying when i get into my new place is a recumbent bike, only cardio i get right now is walking, about 2-3 miles a day. In this heat it's a killer.
 
I've also found that morning cardio works best for me, but i've heard many a bodybuilder swear that raising cortisol levels that high in the morning (morning being the time they are highest anyways) is "muscle suicide." Thoughts?

Cardio has a plethora of benefits, fat loss being only one of them. While not "quite" as good for fat loss, afternoon cardio still provides all of the other benefits.

I doubt you dropped 6-7% in 3 weeks (that's a LOT), but nonetheless I'm sure your progress has been quite nice.

I recommend eating an hour after cardio as well.

Morning cardio is the best time for fat loss AND muscle loss. Being on gear helps a lot with the catabolism, but regardless it's still the worst time for cardio from a MUSCLE-SPARING standpoint. I personally still do it because the fat loss benefits of doing it in the morning are more important to me than the potential catabolism, but anyone telling you it's not bad for your muscles has their head in the sand.
 
Joe brought about a good point, eating an hour after you do cardio is beneficial as well...once im done, i head back, get in the shower, get dressed..by that time an hour has already passed..time for some food!

I could never do that lol. I sit there and think about my body eating the muscle I worked so hard for yesterday and blast it with carbs & protein very soon after finishing cardio. I really wish there was some scientific studies that show morning cardio catabolic levels or response. I need something to put my mind at ease.

As far as motivation or keeping interest I have a TV where my elliptical is so that lessens the bordem. Doesn't help the morning grooginess much though.

While nothing is set in stone, most agree that the optimal thing to eat post-cardio (for low/moderate intensity cardio) is a meal consisting of either pure protein or protein + fat. High-intensity cardio, on the other hand, should be treated like a workout, so here you would have protein + carbs.

My bad, a typo. I meant to say carbs and protein. I always have oats and protein mix in the morning.

Even so, unless it's HIIT you're doing (which I doubt because most don't do that on an empty stomach in the morning) it's advised that you replace those carbs with fat...or leave out the second macronutrient altogether.

Depends on your intensity and duration, and if you're taking anabolic steroids, and if you have some Branched Chains in you about 20min before you start. Then fat loss is a much higher source for fuel, and muscle catabolism is reduced.

Waiting an hour after cardio to eat is questionable with me, for a few personal reasons...this may only be true if your case if its the same as mine. Let's say you'd wake up at 7 am. If you're smart you were in the sack by 11 lights out the night before for a solid 8 hours of sleep AND just prior to that you'd downed some sort of whole food protein or ideally a sustained released protein shake. So when you wake up, you've gone w/out food for a little over 8 hours assuming you don't do crazy shit and wake up in the middle of the night. Get up, go to the gym usually takes 20 min. before I'm on the TMill. Do cardio for at least 30 min...go home yada yada--> boom... you haven't eaten in 9 hours and the clock is ticking..So to wait even longer FOR ME can be dangerous. Maybe its just my body type but I NEED FOOD NOW :evil:My .50

Oh there's plenty you can do to reduce catabolism, but it's still going to be the most catabolic time of day regardless.

lol I agree with you, BUT that's the whole reason it's the most catabolic in the first place (because you haven't eaten for hours). So, TO ME, if you're already willing to do cardio at the time of day it's most catabolic that means you've decided that fat loss is your #1 priority. May as well wait that extra hour. That's my logic anyway. To each their own.
 
I like morning cardio with either water or protein in water beforehand - no carbs or fats.
