What do you bros think?'

My son is 13 next month and has shown an interest in learning how to box. I'm ok with it as long as I don't envision someone pounding his face in. I mean, he played 3 yrs of tackle football.

Well I'm taking him today to a local martial arts academy that does boxing, kickboxing, and all that other jazz, He's really only interested in boxing so he'll do an introductory boxing class today and see if he wants to sign up.

bad idea?

Great idea. Builds confidence and keeps him in shape.

great idea. it's supervised, disciplined, great exercise and will expose him to other martial arts.
If he's interested, you should absolutely support him.

Take em to a real club. I boxed thru middle school and high school at a boxing club where it was serious and had two pro fighters. You wont learn much at an 'academy' too many people not hands on. 13 is a great age to start it will teach him discipline and feeling of accomplishment. It won't be easy they will work you and he will spar by 14.

right...I just see brain injury (but then thats most sports anyway)..but everyone else makes good points

I did some amateur boxing in highschool, and it did me a ton of good. I trained in a shitty gym with some good guys though, one was a pro mma fighter and he would teach classes. boxing classes were absolutely brutal, one of the hardest forms of cardio i've ever done. And yeah he'll get the air knocked out of him, some black eyes, and possibly some cauliflower ear but i think brain damage is far far down the road.

assuming that this is a reputable establishment? nope...great idea...this world is a real shitty place and, if all he learns is a little bit about defending himself and the confidence to exercise that knowledge when he needs to, it will be time/money well spent...he's a dude...a dude should know how to fight.

I thought this skill was generally learned in high school and not in a formal setting

Martial arts are a great way to channel unacceptable behavior in aggressive kids and a great way to build confidence in kids with poor self esteem. I think it's a great idea.

Great stuff. I plan to enroll mine in kick boxing, snooker, poker and other stuff to get them ready for college.

omg...did you ever watch a high school (or grown up, for that matter) fight bewteen 2 completely untrained participants? fucking pitiful...if one of the dudes has even a couple of years of junior olympic (i.e., kiddie) wrestling experience, it's usually a pretty short and embarrassing and painful affair for the other combatant. knowing how to throw a punch and knowing what it feels like and how to deal with taking one, is a valuable skill...they should teach it in school...but they never would in this feminized (no offense to the warrior-women...particularly present company :) ), namby-pamby, sissy-ass world that we live in.

shit I know that's right. Not being afraid of a punch to the grill makes a huge difference in how you react in a real fight. Years of getting beat up by my older brothers in childhood served me very well in high school girls' bathroom altercations.

I had a black in taekwondo and have never ever been in a fight, I should have at least been in 2-3 but I have very good self control and discipline when it comes to being provoked and name called, that's not enough for me to throw a fist, if they dont touch me or a friend I wont fight, I did have a drunk bitch at a bar trying to hug me and sleep in my shoulder, I firmly took her hand off me, looked right at her smiled and said "if you touch me one more time I'm gonna rip your arm off" needless to say she didnt touch me or stand around me anymore ;) I dont think I would have done it though... she was drunk...

i've gotten beat up more than I beat up

everytime I get in a fight or get jumped i'm always -off cycle- kinda blows

I don't think being on or off is going to be the difference between winning a fight.

knowing how to fight is going to be the difference between winning a fight.

I sponsor a heavy weight fighter. Tony Grano is his name. Tony is pretty successful and was the US amateur champ 6 years ago.He has also been flown to Europe to spar with Vitaly Klitsko. We are now friends and feel bad for Tony that he has to make his money this way. The boxing definitely takes a toll on his body and makes me realize how good of a movie Rocky really is. He totally beat the shit out of the last guy I saw him fight, but it lasted five rounds and his body takes more beating than you think. The nurse wanted him to go to the hospital after the fight because she thought he had a broken nose. He didn't go and the nurse knew he just wanted to drink with his friends to celebrate, lol.

I wish I'd been introduced to boxing at a young age. I think losing at that age would not have been good for confidence however. I never lost a school fight, but possibly would've lost in the ring.

I think it is a great idea!!!!

pick him up some skateboard wheels too.
