Under 300 you don't get a good watch...you can get a half-assed watch that looks good by some designer:

depends if you want flashy or not. i don't spend much on watches cause i beat the shit out of them. but i have about 40 or so. ESQ has always been my favorite brand. good designs and solid build. then you get into the kenneth coles, dknys, etc. that you can buy at Macys for under $200.

300.00 would be closer to the sales tax on a good watch.

baum and mercier has some ok lower end pieces. prob find on
sale for a grand or so. classy and fine craftmanship.
tag has some in the grand range, but tag has become the ed hardy
of watches.
a used stainless brietling will run you 2k and worth every penny.
brietling is better than rolex overall and besides, rolex is passe.
i got 3 rolex and i never wear.

Tag , Breitling (my fav to wear), michael kors has a good line out, diesal has some cool letaher ones.. Daily for me is a Mike Kors chrono, at night I wear my Breitling Bentley series. But hands down a all around good watch is a Mike Kors
Nixon, Ammon, and Vestal Bra. Good stuff that won't break the bank that still looks absolutely great.
