Are depression meds worth it?

there is a difference between being mopey or down in the dumps, and full blown clinical depression.
if you aren't feeling great, the day just sucks, hell, the week sucks - that is nothing. then I agree that yes, you have control over that, and if you can't handle it, then toughen up.

but clinical depression is a whole different deal.

unless you have been through it, it is easy to spout off how it is nothing, and how the drugs don't matter.

do I think everyone needs drugs? no.
do I think america is overperscribing them? yes.

but for the most part, I'm disappointed with a few people on this thread.

Thats what I'm talking about Scrappy. Its got nothing to do with "oh my girl cheated on me" or "I got laid off today". Move the fuck on. I'm not defending the overabundance of soccer moms on Prozac and Zoloft. Thats bullshit.

Superstar said "people who are depressed are weak minded." A total load of shit. People who are clinically depressed with a chemical imbalance they cannot control are who I'm defending.

Depression is a physical illness with psychological symptoms. It just comes with a stigma attached to it. You can literally take a depressed person and and non-depressed person and look at their brain waves (looks like a picture with a bunch of different colors), and they will be totally different because of seratonin levels.

Don't knock someone with depression, one day you may very well be in those same shoes.

depression is pure bullshit. its a fucking choice not something that just hits you for no reason. maybe it hits you when you realize what a pathetic fag you are or if your life sucks so you have a reason to be depressed but people who are happy dont suddenly get hit with depression for no reason.

Depression is a choice?? Oh yes because people just LOVE being down in the dumps and feeling like shit all the time...

moneybags you need to be feltched...;)

You are stating an opinion.

It is a fact that she was on anti-depressants. It is a fact she shot Phil and herself.

It is a fact she was using other drugs.

It is a fact that there are no long term studies about what these drugs do. Dr. Leon Eisenberg of Harvard Medical school states that Prozac, Luvox and others are "potent medications that change nerve transimssion." He continues "No one knows what happens after two or three years of that".

It is also a fact that the shooters I mentioned were on Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft or Luvox respectively.

It is a fact that the makers of these drugs have generally reached settlements with surviving familes.

It is a fact that doctors are forced to prescribe from a list of preferred drugs, or the HMO will not reimburse the patient. The doctor's hands are often tied. You may be getting a drug that is not optimal for you, or that you don't need.

It is the opinion of Dr. Peter Breggin, author of two books on the subject, that "the vast majority of studies done on Prozac show it to be of no value whatsoever. But the manufacturers are allowed to select one or two studies that show it to be of marginal assistance and present them to the FDA".

Hey - it;s your call. But make an informed one.

Fact is more people that are not on anti-ds kill others then do people that are using anti-ds

Fact most people that see a shrink, are not 100% truthful with them and in most cases are giving the incorrect meds.

Fact some people that kill others do not do it on a whim--it is a thought that is always with them and rarely do they confide in anyone about there thoughts.(including shrinks) And if they do,
the shrink will almost always have them hospitalizes for a 2 week min. And be put on drugs that make those listed above look like candy. And the patient will either not have the thoughts or in a lot of cases will lie about not having the thoughts just to get out.

Fact--the only reason med companies reach settlements is they do not want the bad press. Millions of people take these drugs and only a handful kill and use the drugs as an excuse.

Fact -- Phil Hartmans wifes medical insurance was not an HMO
but she had her own doctor.

Psychotherapy can not be an exact science--so when a doctor gives one medication, it is up to the patient to report exactly how the meds. are making one feel. a lot of times the patient relys only on meds and thinks that there is a magic pill that has all there answers. Best thing to do is inform one self on the types of meds a doc is giving you and not rely on him to tell you how they should make you feel but be 100% honest with him and yourself. These meds will not make a person kill another--But if you already have feelings of killing someone and are not honest with your doctor about those feelings then you will never get the correct meds and therapy. People that have those types of thoughts are usually schizophrenics(they hear voices) or very strong thoughts that are not there own. And the above drugs will do nothing for them. There are a lot of people out there that have schizophrenia and will never be treated for it. Because they are not truthful with there doctors and or themselves...Peace

depression can be cured by just having a good time. people like to make it like its some chemical thing and nothing they do could make a difference. thats bullshit!!! you are depressed because your life fucking sucks!!! if you had better shit going on then your ass wouldnt be depressed!!!

I've posted my opinions on anti-depressant use many times. And here i go again........

I disagree with your mom saying that she wants you to to take paxil. Is she a doctor?? Is she a psychologist????? If she isn't, than she isn't in a position to make the judgement call as to what meds you should be administered. This is the problem that I have been ranting and raving about for a long time, the fact that people assume that these drugs are miracle cures and should be given at the first signs of anxiety or depression. Perhaps this drug will benefit you but please exhaust all other options. Drug therapy should be a last resort to treat these disorders. I acknowledge the fact that some people benefit greatly from these drugs but it is my opinion that there are many more that do NOT benefit from them yet keep getting the prescription filled. Talk to a few doctors, get a few unbiased opinions and than make the judgement for yourself, not your mother or anybody
else.

Good luck and I hope things work out for you. I know from personal experience that dealing with any kind of psychological or physiological disorder is trying at the best of times but with good friends and supportive peers everything will work out in the end.

Hey Austin,

Did you do a couple of cycles in the past.

Why I ask is maybe your T-Levels are low. That can make you sluggish and depressed too. Get them checked out first.

I did one pretty much all last summer, I never was depressed once while I was on, I always felt real good and Im getting back on.

I don't think I am gonna take anyhting, I never really was, but my mom told me to consider it because it works for her. Ill just sit this shit out, its probably just school and money thats doing it to me
