Are depression meds worth it?

My mom wants me to get on paxil, I know its not quite up there as Prozac, but I still don't wanna take any meds. But on the otehr hand, my anxiety spells have really been sucking lately, and Ive gotten depressed over stupid things. SO I don't know what I shoud do. I should be ok when this semester is over, but Im not positive.

Has Paxil or anytthing else worked for any of you?

I've been on zoloft twice.
I don't like the sides, but it works, so it is worth it in the long run.

i am on prozac, as with any medication, it has it's positives and it's negatives.

Use some of the newer ones and give it a try. I took Prozac for maybe a month and it was like being castrated. It made my cock like a taffy pull. Not fun.

bro I took paxil and prozac. I liked prozac more. If you decide to take meds or not, you should at least go to therapy.

meds are not a permanent solution, they just mask the problem. besides there have no long term studies on any potential side effects associated with anti depressants.

These drugs work about 1/6th of the time. You're better off with cocaine.

Yes--But she was mixing them with coke--booze--and who knows what else. The antidepressants did not make her do what she did.

After seeing what Paxil has done to my father in law - i would never recommend anyone use it!!!!!!!

He got on it about 2 years ago - for temper, anxiety, etc...It did wonders for him for about 8 mts., then slowly it was losing its effectiveness so they upped his dose....this is when things went BAD! He would break out in a full blown sweat - it was GROSS! Running down his face - underarms soaking wet..yuck! then he started losing his mind - he would totally lose concentration..he couldnt remember shit! He would talk for hours and never say anything...he was going crazy!! he tried to decrease his dose again - but OMG - the withdrawals are HORRIBLE.....my mother in law left him last week b/c she couldnt handle it , so I dont know exactly where he's at or how he's doing now.....

You are stating an opinion.

It is a fact that she was on anti-depressants. It is a fact she shot Phil and herself.

It is a fact she was using other drugs.

It is a fact that there are no long term studies about what these drugs do. Dr. Leon Eisenberg of Harvard Medical school states that Prozac, Luvox and others are "potent medications that change nerve transimssion." He continues "No one knows what happens after two or three years of that".

It is also a fact that the shooters I mentioned were on Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft or Luvox respectively.

It is a fact that the makers of these drugs have generally reached settlements with surviving familes.

It is a fact that doctors are forced to prescribe from a list of preferred drugs, or the HMO will not reimburse the patient. The doctor's hands are often tied. You may be getting a drug that is not optimal for you, or that you don't need.

It is the opinion of Dr. Peter Breggin, author of two books on the subject, that "the vast majority of studies done on Prozac show it to be of no value whatsoever. But the manufacturers are allowed to select one or two studies that show it to be of marginal assistance and present them to the FDA".
