How long is am I going to have to keep standing up feeling like I am ripping something inside? This sucks.
Army Vet said:lol The resident expert is here to tell you his story. I went in for surgery a few years ago. Recovery was about 3 months. I had an ileus (which means the intestines shut down) which resulted in a hospital stay of about 10 days. I also caught an infection in the hospital and was messed up for a few more weeks. It was about 3 months until I got back in the gym.
THEN the patch he stuck in moved. He didn't stick it in right. I ended up having another lump the size of a mellon and just got that fixed this summer. Surgery was 6 hours, I have a 12 inch scar on my stomach and an 8" by 12" polypropelene patch in my stomach now. The hospital stay the second time was about a week.
I am almost fully recovered now though. The chances of me getting another hernia is very slim now though because of the huge patch I have.
The BEST advice I could give is make sure you get a good doc to do the surgery. The guy I had is well known locally but he fucked up. The second surgeon who did it has been doing it for 30 years and teaches up at UNC and he was top notch. I was in the gym 5 weeks lifting after the surgery and that is amazing.
Here are a couple of threads I had...

FYI - normal hernia surgery is not that bad. It takes a couple of hours and you are nearly 100% in 6 weeks.
If you are that unlucky 5% and get complications though, prepare for hell.
Megalomaniac said:Thanks a lot for the info. I had surgery on last Wednesday and am in that "recovery" process right now. I hate laying around but I guess I have to do it. I was told the doc was good but do you ever really know? I mean I could tell you I was a good soldier but until you face me or work with me you will never really know.(in docs case probably understand also)
Anyway I am fine if i lay around but sitting up feels like ripping where I guess the patch is. I'm sure this isn't a good thing and I should just not move for two weeks but ya right. Anyway any advice for recovery?
timtim said:my uncle had complications. real bad situation for like 2 full months.
Army Vet said:My wife is a PT and she has treated some really bad cases. A worse case scenario is when the intestines get impinged, the tissue dies, and a portion of the intestines needs to be removed.
My intestines were slightly damaged the second time around but I got lucky and a suture fixed it.
Way before I got my first surgery done I read up on it and I read nothing but good things. Quick, fast, easy, performed over a million times etc. After I had complications I started reading up on that and I realized how bad it can get.
plowboy said:i just had a double groin hernia operation 5 weeks ago, the first week was pure hell, never felt that kinda pain in my life, people had to pull me up off the sofa or chair, im mean it felt like a mule had kicked me down their, doing much better now though, but i do still feel that pulling sensation ur talking about at times. i talked to other people that have had hernias couple yrs ago and can sometime still feel that mesh pull when they strain or try to move real heavy stuff.
