Anybody here ever have a partial biceps tear?

How well did you come back from it?

I was doing curls... and POP... torn at the elbow. My doc says the tendon is still attached, but you can visually see where the muscle is pulled away.

It hurts. It sucks. But that is life.

My doc says I can avoid surgery.

Anybody else have this? Any insights?

From what I've read on the net about other peoples experiences, you'll be out 6 months if you opt for surgery. If not, from what I've read, most people who recover with physical therapy are encouraged to continue to lift weights as part of your PT. As for how intense of lifting you would be able to do I couldn't find any info.

Just try getting some more info from the doc on how long PT will take and what you would be able to do in and out of the gym.

Thanks bro... this is definitely going to be the end of some lifts for me. I'm just not going to be able to take the risk with heavy barbell curls and some similar lifts anymore. The risk just isn't worth the gain.

Deads will make your biceps grow just fine. People tend to overwork the biceps and it leads to tears and strains. 3 sets are all thats need at most for direct bicep work.

Personally, I do curls very last on back day and just do whatever weight I can use since it is simply complimentary to my other lifts.

Hey there,
I tore one of my right bicep tendons at he shoulder end (outer head). I have 1/2 a bicep!
It's pretty obvious where it tore and sucked down towards the elbow. the Doctors discouraged surgery - said very painfull recovery and not very reliable. Like "trying to sew together 2 pieces of wet speghetti". They said I could get most of the use of it back anyway. After the initial rest period - a week or 2-3, I started doing curl sets of twenty. I do all hand positions (regular, hammer and reverse) to strengthen all of the muscles that assist the bicep. I also always do all of the pulls, chins etc. One trainer told me he thought my triceps were disproportionatly bigger/stronger than my biceps and the imbalance caused me to be more seseptable to a tear. Anyway I just now started to go for strength/size again and I'm up to 80 lb curls (I know, not much but a good comeback trail weight. I use the stack on close grip pulldowns )It looks kinda funny but at first glance it looks like a well defined peaked biceps! I am 55 years old and I did it 3-4 yrs ago wrestling with my son in the pool.
Like you said, it sucks but done is done - make the best of it! It can and will get stronger.
Good luck!

The bicep curled up and he suggested no surgery? Strange...

I tore mine near the shoulder 2...maybe 3 months ago. VERY light training for several weeks (avoiding anything that could stress it at all) and I used an elbow sleeve, ice, HOT creams for training, tylenol, and put a knee wrap on it quite often to help keep it tight when training and sleeping when needed.
