I'm thinking of doing this in a month or so when it cools down. I'll be hiking a lot in the mountains and pitching a tent at night for about 3 days. My only concern is getting lost. Should I use one of those GPS gadget thingies?

Anybody ever do this?
I think it'll be great at relaxing and clearing my mind.

Thoughts?

I hike and hunt alone all the time. A GPS can be helpful, but getting to know your terrain is a better bet. Look for landmarks as you hike to help you get reference. If you go off the beaten path, there is a cheap way to help you not get lost: Pick up some marking tape from your local sporting good store and mark your way in. Be sure to collect the tape on your way out.

The biggest thing to do when venturing out alone is to tell someone where your going, how long, and when to expect you back. This way if you get injured and can't make it out someone will know where to look for you.

I grew up wandering alone a lot in the woods, mountains, hills. I could so go 'Jeremiah Johnson' if i wanted heh. Can get scary sometimes if you are the paranoid type.
