I'm thinking of doing this in a month or so when it cools down. I'll be hiking a lot in the mountains and pitching a tent at night for about 3 days. My only concern is getting lost. Should I use one of those GPS gadget thingies?

Anybody ever do this?
I think it'll be great at relaxing and clearing my mind.

Thoughts?

I like camping, I tend to prefer State Park or something of the likes. GPS? I have never been on a hike which required one so I can not say. Hiking alone could be cool, I like to have at least bro or a hot chic when I camp. I definately prefer late Fall and early Spring due to cooler temps.

You can't beat camping alone bro. Don't go crazy and hike a 15k' or anything, just someplace nice and off the beaten path. Camping with friends is SO different from camping by yourself. GPS might be overkill, besides you still have to know how to read a map with GPS (older ones?) just do some research on the internet and find a good trail. All depends on where you live too...

hiking alone is great for clearing the head. i've been in the grand canyon alone, and nothern california alone hiking. i love it. you really have time to clear...heck when i went to the grand canyon i had all kinds of stress and shit going on. as soon as i steped foot on that ledge and descended, it was like a lite switch, that shit on my mind just turned off. it was fucking niiiice...as far as gps goes, i've been on some hikes and what not that did not pick up a signal...you know how to read the trail ducts right.....the little pile of rocks that people stack up ot let you know the path? keep an eye out for them...good luck bro, where are you thinking about going?

I do,, often. at least once a year to clear my mind
But I wouldn't go alone anywhere with potential for falls/injury.
Such as ridgelines, rocks, steep grades etc.

It is much more Risky than hiking in the flatlands or at improved
campgrounds where you aren't climbing or cutting wood etc.

I love camping and hiking alone, I just know the risk of some places and would want a co-hiker just in case something goes wrong.

I have a GPS as a backup if I am hiking in a new area or an area I am not familiar with. Usually I will mark a GOTO for the camp or parking area and then only turn on the GPS if I get turned around.

Is this a special trip they have at the Senior Home every so often?

I hike and hunt alone all the time. A GPS can be helpful, but getting to know your terrain is a better bet. Look for landmarks as you hike to help you get reference. If you go off the beaten path, there is a cheap way to help you not get lost: Pick up some marking tape from your local sporting good store and mark your way in. Be sure to collect the tape on your way out.

The biggest thing to do when venturing out alone is to tell someone where your going, how long, and when to expect you back. This way if you get injured and can't make it out someone will know where to look for you.

I grew up wandering alone a lot in the woods, mountains, hills. I could so go 'Jeremiah Johnson' if i wanted heh. Can get scary sometimes if you are the paranoid type.
