Tomorrow I have to give a 1000 word speech for one of my classes. I have it typed up and I feel it is pretty killer... however, Im gonna be up there for atleast 5 mins. This is nerve wrecking and I am seriously stresing out. Theres probably like 60 ppl in that class + 10 or so hot women. I can feel the heat coming on ... so does anyone know how to give a speech without fucking up? I have it memorized already tho...

Picture everyone naked! That will help to calm your nerves!

Yeah but there are 10 hotties in that class so what if I pop one right infront of everyone? Oh god!

I can see it now:

"The American Dream is the faith held by many in America that through hard work, and determination one can achieve...." *pictures everyone naked, sees hot Blonde in third row*
*clears throat*
"one can achieve..."
*sweat starts pouring out*
"one can..one... oone...cccan.... I GOTTA GO!!!!" *runs out of the room straight to the bathroom."

BOING!!!

rehearse rehearse rehearse

I am a phenomenal public speaker and this is the only "trick".

I, for once, agree with MTS...except you need to really believe 100% in what you are saying. Usually what you actually say is only 35% of what the people see - -there is is also body language, and your tone of voice.....

Good points all.

rehearsals should be as accurate as they can be...if you can get in the room before hand, do that. If you are using a podium, practce with a podium. Rehearse like it is the real thing, and your body language and tone of voice will develop as well.

*it's ok to agree with me at times.

The better you know the subject you are speaking about, the better you are likely to come across to your audience. If you have just memorized a spiel that you barely understand, you're not going to speak with much confidence. But if you're speaking about something that you know inside and out, then you are going to be relaxed up there. You will feel less 'rigid'...less like a human TiVo that is regurgitating information. You'll feel like you are talking 'with' the audience, not 'at' them...and that kind of relaxed confidence will flow from you and affect your audience.

very good advice

Practice, practice and more practice.

dont talk too fast, dotn forget to breathe. back in uni most people would talk like horserace commentators, especially the chinese ones ;)

i was a shocking partner with public speakers, everytime my mates would stutter, id giggle like a lunatic and tehyd fuck up worse :lmao: then of course id giggle harder and the whole audience would crack up

make eye contact with people in the audience as you speak. if it help to picture your audience in their underwear, do so. Keep a good tone of voice. Don't use filler words like "uh" and "um". dont overuse hand gestures.

prepare a written version of your speech to refer to. double space and use huge lettering. do not read this printed speech; it is merely a reference tool. highlight or underline main themes/ideas in the text so you have easy reference if you get lost.

Well I finished it.. took me like 8 minutes. The jokes all had them in stitches , and they seem to be atleast vaguely interested in the American Dream as it changed over time. My voice ALMOST cracked at the beggining, but then I became really cynical and started going:

Why am I scared of these ppl? I am smarter than they are anyways. They have to hang on my everyword. I am the one on the podium.. I'm better looking... they don't know anything... hell they aren't even pretty (the girls).

And it totally chilled my nerves and I became really fluid. I even started cracking jokes off the top of my head. Like I said I had already memorized the speech prior , so everything came together like clockwork. Since I am no longer a speech-virgin, I feel like I can give speeches all day to 600, 700-ten thousand ppl. :D

1-picture them naked
2-think funny things so that you wont get to serious\
3-do not stare off into no where while talking. they say to look directly at the people that you are speaking to
4-if reading from a paper try to read the whole sentence then say it so you arent looking at paper word for word you will get muffled
5-water bottle with you so you dont get a dry mouth

Practice, be prepared. Not giving a fuck seems to work for me. I used to be very nervous in front of a group, but when you come to realize that most people don't give a rats ass what you are saying anyway, it makes it all the easier.

Be well prepared, know it by heart exactly.

´Dress up

Dont stand too still or walk around too nervously. Calmly move about a bit

Adjust your speed of speaking to your audience.

Use your arms and facial expressions and intonation to fit what you are saying, but don´t make a caricature out of it.

A lot of it is talent. social skill. very basic. Connecting to who you are speaking to.

Thanks for the hints....

No offense but did you guys read my post at all?
