Any Cat Lovers

I am planning to buy a cat. Is there any specific one that is good for a house pet. This is my first time buying a cat so any help would be appreciated.
One more question ( This might be a dumb question but anyways)does anyone knows what kind of cat is this ( left). I want to get a furry one. lol

I believe the left one is the same cat they have shown on the movie " Meet the Focker" Or is it different?

In my opinion, the best pet cats are mutts, aka "domestic short hair". Sometimes pet stores sell them as "yard cats". Long haired cats shed all the time and require too much maintenance. And they have issues with dingleberries after they use the cat box. The Persians like the one in your picture with the shortened snout tend to have sinus problems.

Get a free kitten from the want ads in your local paper.

I am planning to get one at the shelter, Is better that way.

I have 2 registered cats. The rest of them are either throw-aways or rescued. The orphaned cats seem to be much better. It's almost as if they're more appreciative b/c of where they came from. My 2 pure breds are bitches. I love'em but they're not nearly as loving as the others. As far as your pic goes, the one on the left is Himalayan Persian. Rescue one from your local animal shelter or get one from someone giving them away. It'll do your heart good.

Same with my cats ... 2 came from a shelter and would never scratch someone and 1 came from a breeder and that one will scratch you without thinking twice if you pet her the wrong way...

I know all of my cats will come from shelters from now on :)

Yeah, the city shelter or Humane Society is fine.

I have two stray rescues
just took in a female that I beleive is pregnant
as mentioned earlier the strays are more appreciative
this pregnant one got in my bed and purred and slept next to me

Kitten on the left is a seal point Himalayan

Kitten on the right is a white Persian

Trust me, my mother in law BRED pedigreed persians, I owned them for years, I wouldn't have another. They're cute when they're little, but those coats are HIGH maintenance, serious work. When they have long and FLUFFY coats you really have to stay on top of them or the undercoat (which makes them fluffy) gets badly, badly, badly, matted very quickly. The coates are more than the cats can manage, they NEED to be groomed EVERY day.

I do have one cat that has a long coat, but she's a mutt/cross she doesn't have that thick fluffy undercoat and she adores being brushed and combed anyway because she knows how beautiful she is (yes, the cat is vain).

I have seven cats, all female, some aren't neutered, interesting group dynamics, and they all have different personalities which is more noticeable in a single sex group. Inherited one from my son when he joined the service (neutered, sweet as hell, but not very bright), one from my mother when she passed away (neutered, and just screwed up in the head, cries when you try to hold her), one was a semi-feral that adopted me (whole, frighteningly intelligent, understands verbal commands, queen of the house), one was a serious feral that we caught fair and square and is still wild and extremely timid just got freshly neutered and too fearful to have a personality yet; three we got from the SPCA when I thought I wanted to have a baby. One I had to neuter and she gained about 6 pounds of solid muscle and turned into a dyke, one is an Abyssinian cross and the coolest cat -- climbs like an acrobat, extremely affectionate, intelligent, friendly and inquisitive (GREAT breed, highly recommended, what a blast, I'd have a houseful of these) and one is a fat tabby with an oral fixation that I'm afraid to neuter, she's already the fattest thing in the house (I think she's got the cat equivalent of Prader Willie syndrome ...)

There are pedigree rescues that you can look up online, if you're really interested in a particular type, they provide a valuable service and really match the animal to the owner.

This is so true. The pure breds are bitches. And, you are right the strays are much more appreciative.

I don't have cats, but I apply this same theory to women.

I've found that the younger you get them - the more you can almost "mold" them into how you want them - now they will get their own personality of course - but if you can lavish attention on them when they are very young...they tend to be more affectionate when they get older..... Of course - there is always the exception and you get a cool older cat....but older cats have more set in personalities....

One thought on the Himalayans - they are cute as shit, but are a hybrid and will tend to be very high maintenance healthwise. (i.e. $$$$)

My cat is a disgustingly robust (healthy wise & waist wise) black & white short hair "domestic" male I got from the animal rescue center 1 week before Hurricane Andrew plowed thru my backyard. I hate to say it, but he's been the most reliable male I've known in those 13 years. I can rely on him to shed, barf, never pee or poo in the house, and always be there to love. Like Jen said, he's got the most amazing personality and he's constant humor & love all the time. I wonder if males are more friendly than females ..well after u get them fixed .. hmmm,. maybe that makes him sort of geigh -- therefore just like a girl's best girlfriend.... poor kitty...:(

Anyway. I get upset every time I think about if I hadn't gone to the animal rescue center that day. He definitely picked me and he's made my world a much better place.

Male cats do tend to be more gregarious. Females can be sweet, but they also have an instinct to be very guarded and protective, even if they've been fixed. Comes from their need to protect their kittens I guess.

LOL then maybe males are just perpetual momma's boys.

Go to a farm and get an inbred cat like I did. He's a little squirrelly, BUT, a lot of fun.

Tuxedo cats are the only way to go. I'm shure mr. DB would agree with me on that

LOL :) My stash is far away from the house :) Those kurilians are big cats, males are over 25lbs sometimes. And that cat is speaking some cat language, anytime I`m getting back home the cat is always there to say something and it really looks like cat is speaking, not just meow! :) but lots of different sweet words in cat language :)
That female gives us incredible headache asking for a male though :) I cant stand the sounds at all

what's interesting is this thrid cat I've added is a mixture of my other two
I have a short haired white male and a "bushy" grey female
this third cat is a grey and white mix with semi-long hair

Both of mine do. It was cool during halloween, they sat on the windowsill facing the front door and all the kids thought they were fake, then I made them attack :D

you guys don't realize the potential of a box of kittens
take them to the tanning bed
hair stylist places
nail salons

I like the kitty.

Persian Cat. Thanks dB

If you were asking about the cat on the left, in your picture - it is a Himalayan. Some think they are better for allergy sufferers because they have less 'dander' - kind of like a hypoallergenic cat. :)

Persian cats have the little smushed in noses. If you are not home often - I might get an older cat 2-3yrs and up that is litterbox trained and also either declawed or is used to having clipped claws....(think furniture destruction).

Hope that helps.

I have Garfields clone he is 27lbs some people call him CATDOG.Cats are great they are a trip when the play they keep you laughing all day long.

i dunno... himalayans need tons of grooming, and their eyes need cleaning.
And when they sneeze... snot everywhere. It's the inbreeding.
