Another 5x5 Question

mulva said:
I started the 5x5 workout on Saturday with chest and shoulders. For chest I did:

incline bench 5x5
bench press 5x5
decline db press 2x8

This worked pretty well for me, I'm just concerned that after I'm on the program for awhile and the weights increase on the incline 5x5 sets, that won't be able to get a good 5x5 workout on the flat bench press. Do you think I should switch something around and start with chest 5x5, then do incline (either bb or db) 2x8 and decline db 2x8?

I think you've got a recipe for overtraining here. Maybe not when you start the cycle with the lighter weights, but by mid cycle it's overkill. Chose one core exercise for the 5x5, add two auxilliaries for two sets each (9 total sets versus your 11).

right on.....to answer you ? I do 5x5 routine on Day 1 and more of a 8-12 higher rep, more flys on day 6......

Bro you are overtraining there. Doing 5x5 for both incline and flat bench is way too much stress on your CNS.

Like I said before, db's versus bb's is personal preference, incline versus flat is also personal preference. Whatever you are doing now you switch up. Besides, you will still be doing both incline and flat now anyway. Using db's or bb's, flats or inclines will not make the biggest difference in the world. You are over-analyzing now.

What I do is very simple and basic, yet all you need:

5x5 flat bb bench
2x8 incline bb bench
2x8 pullovers

I do my pullovers on back day............day after chest.........so it's a sweet stretch for both..........and I do decline 2 x 8-10
