I did what I did, at that moment im not even sure the tone I used. Seemed like the entire line went silent though. What I am asking is really, would you have handled the situation the same or just allowed some stranger to scream at your child for no reason at all?

No matter what the circumstance, I don't like people to correct my children in front of me. If they have a problem, and I am there, then they need to tell me directly. Anyone who thinks otherwise does not have children.
I think you were correct in your action and handled it perfectly.
With that being said, I will correct someones child if I beleive they are behaving inapporpriately and there is no parent around but I would try to do it in a firm but polite manner.
