...that supported the war, or bush, or the bullshit that has been spun, or did at some stage support/believe in any of it, i was wondering, what do you guys think about the use of depleted uranium throughout iraq?

i mean, sorry to be that annoying jimmy the cricket voice (with an aussie accent) and bring up those things that some people here like to forget (like you know, weapons of mass destruction, osama bin laden, the association between osama and saddam that wasnt, the association between 911 and iraq that wasnt, the UN not sanctioning the war, the head of the iraq weapons inspectors "committing suicide"...how convenient..., americans calling questioners unpatriotic, freedom fries, "shock and awe" killing thousands of cowering iraqis in their homes, military protection of the oil ministry but no other ministry, abu ghraib, guatanamo bay, all those "enemy combatants" held without trial, bush winning the second election by 1%...how convenient...during the first election where electronic voting machines are used and are not subject to public scrutiny...how convenient....where evidence of vote manipulation was rife....anyway, all those things that a right thinking person would think would lead pretty instantly to impeachment and imprisonment, but apart from all that, what i want to talk about today is...

...depleted uranium. i mean, given that the world is scared shitless of terrorists detonating a "dirty bomb" in some western city, and given that its just after the 60th anniversary of atomic weapons being dropped in hiroshima/nagasaki, im curious to know what all you people who accept the war think about your military sprinkling hundreds of tonnes of depleted uranium throughout iraq, which in itself is a weapon of mass destruction, poisoning the land, air, water, people of iraq (who are giving birth to nicely deformed children as we speak, and suffering ungodly rates of previously insignificant cancers - side effects that are shared by the very soldiers using the ammunition, which is rather at odds with the "support the troops" idiots who think that public sympathy/empathy for soldiers is what is needed, rather than withdrawal from an immoral, unneccessary war (though that particular phrase has lost its poignancy through sheer repetition)

so come on. would all the pro-war, pro-"democracy", pro-"shut up GD you fucking foreigner", pro-"here is freedom, so shut up and put on your veil" people, who are so noisy in other threads, like to post their opinions on the costs, benefits, and morality of using such weapons in the context of the iraq and afghan wars?

...or will your shame, and silence, let this thread sink to the bottom of the site, until a thread comes up where its suitable for you to chime in, en masse, and type in slogans and "pwned" while you backslap each other on how wonderful you are

hm?

by the way, australia is up to its neck in iraq and afghanistan at the moment, so keep it civil...comerades :)

GD must not have gotten laid tonight. Why are you so worried about the US? Or, as usual areyou stirring the pot because you are bored? Shouldn't you be denying someone's script because you disagree with the doctor who wrote it, even though he has a ton more education than you?
I like you GD, but your anti-US and govt. threads are getting old.
Stick to convoluted stories of how all the women love you when you go out because you look so good. :)

That was a pretty good read. By the sounds of it DU ammunition and armour has the same effects as nuclear bombs just not as significantly harmful.

Govts that use it obviously deny any possible side effects to it though.

Wholly Fuck.
I was a tanker in the early 80's & I know the effective range of our weapons in the Leopard 1. This more than doubles it on the high end. If I recall correctly, we didn't have depleted uranium rounds for general use, but they were available from the U.S. if war broke out. I can see why it would be so attractive to military planners, but I think a little more social responsibility would be in order. Not just against the enemy (in a territory you don't want to occupy anyways) but in your own military.
I don't agree with GD's constant U.S. bashing, but whoever thought this was acceptable needs their head read. I wonder if it could be traced to one person or committee?

1) i wrote it mid afternoon before i went to the gym - and everyone knows sex before the gym is bad :)
2) im not worried at all. im just bringing something i find distinctly hypocritical up for discussion.
3) i deny scripts only when it is in the patients interest for me to do so. you saying that a doc has a ton more education than i is idiotic, since their education is not applicable to the finer intricacies of drug therapy. id hate to break it to you but some doctors make very stupid mistakes.
4) theyre not anti US threads. theyre just threads aimed at the cracks in US policy, and the mindset of some americans on the board.
5) my stories arent terribly convoluted, theyre rather straightforward i think :)

All for the depleted uranium thing. Also all for the neutron bomb. I'd rather them drop a million neutron bombs than one of our hydrogen bombs. One of our big boys would wipe Iraq off of the map.....

That would suck, cause then all of the maps and globes would have to be corrected and that would make my globe obsolete

Maybe you agree or don't with his post, but calling someone a sheep is such a cliche...both sides of the war/bush issue could equally be called sheep. Failure to see this determines how much of a fool someone is...

There are many variations of "dumb." Injecting blind emotion into every argument without supporting said arguments with any viable, debatable fact is what I would call dumb.

And if you wanted to get technical, the majority of Americans (based on recent polling) oppose Bush and the war in Iraq, so therefor opposing Bush and the war in Iraq, by definition, makes you a sheep. :)

I dont oppose Bush, but I do oppose the war in Iraq...but then again I can comprehend the differences between the two.

And thus begins starfish piggy-backing on somebody elses statement without providing any basis of argument. Im wondering if she has one original intelligent thought in her head?

Now we must cut to her standard: "I dont have to spend time backing up what I say...Ive already gotten lots of karma for my post....I know people who live near an army base....STOP THE LYING!" reply.

Do us all a favor and save it. No. I'm not a tough guy. Actually, just a hard working paramedic chick. But I do know this: My man leaves on the 22nd of this month to go to Iraq for the 3rd time. The 2nd time he was gone, he got to come back early because some shit blew up with him right in the middle of it all. He had his little surgery ...got all of the fragments sliced out of his leg ... spent some time on crutches. But guess what? He's back to 110%. Ready to go again. Ready to miss another Christmas with his family ... spend another birthday getting shot at for a bunch of ungrateful people who sit on their lard asses. People who make opinions about what they here on the news. No, I haven't been in the trenches. I'm just a paramedic chick. But with some of the letters he sends when he is away -- I wish I could be right there with him.He feels bad for those people he tries to help. The worst part is he wouldn't be mad if he read this thread. He would just say that every American has the right to express their opinion. U know what I think? I think it would be great if he spent at least a couple of his leave days kicking the asses of unappreciative shit talking americans. But maybe that's why I couldn't do his job. Maybe that's why he is the Marine and I am the paramedic. I guess he is more forgiving. Lucky bastards.

Pardon me whilst I take a deep breath......

i mean, sorry to be that annoying jimmy the cricket voice (with an aussie accent) and bring up those things that some people here like to forget (like you know, weapons of mass destruction, osama bin laden, the association between osama and saddam that wasnt, the association between 911 and iraq that wasnt, the UN not sanctioning the war, the head of the iraq weapons inspectors "committing suicide"...how convenient..., americans calling questioners unpatriotic, freedom fries, "shock and awe" killing thousands of cowering iraqis in their homes, military protection of the oil ministry but no other ministry, abu ghraib, guatanamo bay, all those "enemy combatants" held without trial, bush winning the second election by 1%...how convenient...during the first election where electronic voting machines are used and are not subject to public scrutiny...how convenient....where evidence of vote manipulation was rife....anyway, all those things that a right thinking person would think would lead pretty instantly to impeachment and imprisonment, but apart from all that, what i want to talk about today is...

Lets take this point-by point:

WMDs: We dont even have to go over this one too much. Shitty excuse for a shitty war. Whether or not they exist, however, is still up in the air (believe it or not).

bin Laden: What about him? The fact that his global network he spent over a decade building has been, for the most part, completely ruined? The fact that since Bush has been in office, there has been only 1 attack against the US, whereas under Clinton there were a dozen? Im not sure exactly what you want to discuss, so be more specific.

Association between Saddam and bin Laden "that wasnt:" Debunks your entire argument from now to eternity. Proven beyond a reasonable doubt, even published in sources you would agree with; NYT, AP, Reuters, etc that there indeed WAS a collaboration between Saddam and bin Laden. A working relationship towards a common goal; the destruction of Israel and conversion of the Western world. I think youre confusing this point with....

Saddam and 9/11: No evidence that supports such a claim. I assume that was your point.

The UN not sanctioning the war: Please go into detail explaining how this war was "illegal." 10 bucks says you cant, because through mandates and resolutions, we did have authority through the United Nations. If not for Saddam constantly breaking the cease-fire during the '90s, then for the resolutions that were passed in the '00s as well.

Americans questioning the war: I dont call anybody unpatriotic for questioning the war or Bush. I call people assholes for insulting and/or not supporting the troops. Many here fail to see the distinction.

Shock and Awe killing blah blah blah: Blind emotion = biggest sign of weak argument. "Oh god, think of the children!" If you want to debate the facts (or theories in many cases you bring up) then debate them. Its a war, sometimes civilians die. Anybody who suggests that our troops have NOT placed themselves in greater danger by protecting Iraqi civilians needs their heads examined.

Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay: "Im not outraged by the actions at Abu Ghraib. Im outraged by the outrage" - Senator whose name I cannot remember.
If you consider urinating on a Koran as torture, I sincerely hope you are never captured during a war. You are in for a big surprise.

Bush winning two elections: Are you complaining that Bush won? Or that Gore dragged the country through an illegal supreme court fiasco? Or that Bush won the 2nd time around despite everything thrown at him except the kitchen sink? Elaborate.

...depleted uranium. i mean, given that the world is scared shitless of terrorists detonating a "dirty bomb" in some western city, and given that its just after the 60th anniversary of atomic weapons being dropped in hiroshima/nagasaki, im curious to know what all you people who accept the war think about your military sprinkling hundreds of tonnes of depleted uranium throughout iraq, which in itself is a weapon of mass destruction, poisoning the land, air, water, people of iraq (who are giving birth to nicely deformed children as we speak, and suffering ungodly rates of previously insignificant cancers - side effects that are shared by the very soldiers using the ammunition, which is rather at odds with the "support the troops" idiots who think that public sympathy/empathy for soldiers is what is needed, rather than withdrawal from an immoral, unneccessary war (though that particular phrase has lost its poignancy through sheer repetition)

As for what I assume was the point of your rant...I dont see why we should use a more effective killing tool when at the same time we are placing more and more of our soldiers in harms way by restraining their effectiveness because of bullshit PC pressure. There are much more effecient ways of doing this that would have resulted in less than 1/4 of the US AND Iraqi civilian casualties that we have endured up to this point.

In short, our self-imposed weakness is the problem.

Who knows. But it isn't a problem that will go away if we just ignore it. I wish our men could all just stay here. But the people we are dealing with ... it's not like they will just stop fucking with us if we stop fucking with them. Personally, from the start, I said we shouldn't send our troops.I though we should just bomb Iraq from here without our guys even going. But my man says it wouldn't be right. He says it's hard to understand until u see the children that live there. I wish he didn't need to go but he says it's the only way.

if you recieve an injury in combat, do you have to go back to battle once healed? or can it be an out?

Then move to another country and see how your treated.

Now we must cut to her standard: "I dont have to spend time backing up what I say...Ive already gotten lots of karma for my post....I know people who live near an army base....STOP THE LYING!" reply.

Do us all a favor and save it. At least GD comes up with his own arguments (no matter how many holes are in them :) ) but youre like the scrawny, idiotic bully who, after some poor kid and gotten the shit kicked out of him by a group of kids, runs up and kicks him once when hes unconscious then runs away.

It depends on your chance of recovery. He had a hard time at first but he was driven to get back to work. He's just as good ... if not better than ever. He spent 2 months unable to walk ... but as soon as he could ... he was back to doing a couple of hours of PT every day with the rest of his guys. Once u get hurt, u gotta try real hard to prove yourself. They are real careful b/c they don't want to send in someone unable to do the job. It would put the other men at risk. But he was only 28. He didn't want to give up. He has drive. Now, if u lose a leg ... that's another story. Then u are just screwed.

I'm pretty sure Americans used in this context was the united states, not the continent, but golf clap for the attempt at muddying this thread.

I wasnt making a comment about them.

Im just wondering if they had any kids that turned out to have matured beyond prepubescent intellect? Asking that isnt an insult against them, its an insult against you. If you had matured beyond prepubescent intellect, you would be able to realize this.

And hey, youre a big fan of free speech, remember? And unlike yourself, Im someone who has fought to preserve the right both you and I hold so dear.

lol i think you quoted deterass when you should have quoted me...let's say you recieve a superficial injury that puts you out of combat for a while, nothing debilitating...and you don't want to go back, do them make you? or can an injury = no more combat, if you want it to be?

from the context of this thread, im going to take that post as being aimed at me.

despite your mans readiness to make sacrifices to uphold the decisions made by your administration is irrelevant to this discussion.

but dealing with the topic you broached, disagreeing with the war does not mean you are underminng your mans sacrifice. voicing your opinion, however hurtful to some people, is essential to the health of your society. in my mind, the greatest sin in this war, for your countrypeople, was the misuse of worthy, noble poeple in the military to fight a dirty, unjust war.

i live in a military town. i was involved with military contracts (housing). i rub shoulders with soldiers, sailors, and airmen regularly. australia is involved indelibly in this war and as such, i will voice my opinion as i like.

From your last couple of posts I feel you speak primarily out of emotion. Of course, your husband is being deployed there so I'm sure you assume the obligation of supporting him... and thats noble.

But just like nevin said, its not bashing our troops (which none of us have) to completely disagree with the decision of deploying them in this region. For one second, instead of thinking how honorable your husband is (we already know this as fact), think of the reasons he was sent out... and think to yourself if it's really worth putting his life on the line for THIS OPERATION, which, in my opinion is not about enduring freedom in the least.

You claim we should still be there because "it's not like theyll stop fucking with us if we stop fucking with them." When, may I ask, has Iraq ever attacked the United States, or even fired a missile near our soil. Hypothetically, responding with "we're just being pro-active" isn't good enough and certainly unjustified for the lost lives of countless Americans and Iraqi's. Would you stand by your statement if we were to attack Saudi Arabia next week? After all, most of the extremists we read about are of Saudi descent, including a majority of the 9/11 terrorists and a man you may have heard about: Osama bin Laden. Would it surprise you if the United States are strong allies with the Saudis? It's all politics, dear.

Yep. U are right. I clicked 2fast. It was meant for u. Honestly, i'm not sure. All of the men I know would want to go back. It's just what they do. If u didn't want to go back to combat- u could probably get released due to PTSD. If u were still under contract, they would probably give u a crappy office job on base until u finished your time. I'm not positive but I think that's about how it goes.

4everhung said:

You bash him because he did what was obligated, by serving his duty, and protesting about the same operation which he was involved. I see nothing wrong here... because your deployed doesn't mean your inclined to be a puppet of the system. I admire his actions.

Do you think Muhammad Ali was a load of shit as well because he "ain't got no problem with the Viet Cong," in his own words.

Why? He went. He served his country. You may have an issue with his voice when he returned but he certainly had that right in the US of A.

As Gambino stated, at least he went when many of his rich compatriots did not i.e Bill Clinton and George Bush.

you know, i hear that when two people really love each other, they can feel each others hurt. in your case, clearly, when that bomb went off in close proximity to your man, he got the shrapnel, but you got the brain damage.

DU is not fissile material. DU is only used against armored targets, simply because it is so very effective against them. As for the effects of DU..... they come with the territory.

My suggestion to you, gd, is to quit your bitching. If you are so abhorred by DU, then develop an "environmentally friendly" replacement. If it was up to liberals like you, the militaries of the West would be limited to wiffle bats and spitwads for weapons. You don't win wars with those.

Would someone hand me a decoder ring or at least try to explain to me what the hell she is talking about?

I think I may see where you are going...my lack of respect towards you. Im a big believer that respect is earned, not given. You dont see me insulting folks like GD (who has insulted me before), Catalyst (who has insulted me before), or bluepeter (who has never insulted me, but is Canadian) when we debate...but its because these folks actually post intelligent (or in GD's case, somewhat intelligent :) ) arguments attempting to reinforce their beliefs.

All you have on a message board are paragraphs, sentences, and the words that make them up. Their words command respect. Yours do not.

Feel free to reply with caps lock explaining how immature I am and how you have not only recieved lots of karma for your posts, but that you dont have time for us as well.

2. Slit your wrists, or

I casually scroll through a thread and see you making personal cheap shots towards me - and now my parents when I'm not even talking to you. Otherwise...you are EASY to ignore.

You obviously have much more time for me...I don't even talk to you are make posts towards you unless I get tired of you being so point-blank rude to me.

Say whatever makes u feel good. I would tell u to only talk about things u know about .... but that would make u a really quiet guy.
As far as my BRAIN DAMAGE goes: I work 70-100 hours a week as a Paramedic. oh, youve discovered that it pisses you off when people reply innappropriately to you? really? how did you work that one out?

i spoke nicely to you, and you replied like a tart bitch. who the hell do you think you are that you can rubbish my posts and tell me to shut the hell up? fuck you! i dont give a shit that you work lots and lots of hours per week as a paramedic. you get PAID. thats your JOB. you dont like it? cut hours, and shut the hell up.

you want to pull the medical badge on me and act like youre a saint? for doing your job? ill think of it when im working as a pharmacist, diagnosing things that a doctor should have but the person cant afford it so they come to ME, for FREE. ill think of it when the public health system takes a dump on my profession time and time again simply because its politically convenient, because its easier to tally up how much drugs cost as opposed to how much money (and lives) are saved when someone like me looks over a patients drug history and finds someone elses mistake, or something that might be done better, or somehow finds a real solution to a real problem, as opposed to some of the bullshit that is flung out by other medical practitioners. frankly, i dont give a shit how many hours you work. you spoke rudely to me, and i replied in kind, so that you can feel the indignation i felt, and not repeat it.

now, i dont watch TV. nor do i have a lard arse. and if people like me were in charge of the country, people like your partner wouldnt be in harms way in the first place. and im in australia. we dont have marines. we have ADF personell.

you self righteous idiot. i start the thread to chat about depleted uranium, and you start with the knee jerk idiot patriotism that wasnt, then have the gall to tell me that you were having a real discussion with real people, because your partner got some shrapnel in his leg and missed christmas.
