Advice wanted - where do good bros buy suits?

A friend is getting married this year and I figured its a good excuse to get a new suit. I currently only own one right now, and I purchased it in 1995. I weigh a good 25 lbs more now (all muscle baby!) and am tired of the snug fit.

Does anyone here have any advice on where to get a good suit? I want something nice, but want to keep it under $2000.


My first thought is just to roll to Nordstrom (where I get 90% of my clothes) and work with someone in the Men's dept. They carry quality clothes and there service is top notch.

saks. especially if you have an "A" store in your area. Birmingham has a "B" store and it doesn't have a large selection.
Atlanta is an "A" and you have an amazing selection to choose from.

nordstrom is a great place for shoes and casual wear but not suits.

LayinBack pretty much sums it up.
Nordstrom appears to be more economically feasible.
Quality aint Saks, but its alot more affordable.
Also Brooks Brothers has good quality.
Not your style exactly, but good suits.

Agreed.

Most people can not afford Norstroms OR Saks OR Brookes Brothers.

For the quality and service (I don't know if they still offer alterations gratis but back in the day they did) I feel that the price can't be beat.

Also instead of a suit you might want to consider purchasing a sport coat and two different pairs of trousers with two different shirts and ties. IMHO that is the best value for your money. You get more *look* for less.

Also - to ALL the men, may I make a suggestion?

You should always ALWAYS have as a minimum one pair of black dress shoes and one pair of either burgundy or brown. ALWAYS... If you go with something a little more classic then trendy even though you will drop bout 200$ for the shoes they will last a long time without going out of fashion. Matter of fact they will last quite a while if you care for them properly, just need to get them resoled occasionally.

For shoes DSW CAN NOT BE BEAT. You get name brands for waaaaaaay less. Neiman Marcus last call is also good but they do not have the prices and selection that DSW has.

There is NOTHING WORSE than a man wearing cheap/worn shoes. UGH... Successfull men always ALWAYS wear comfortable, well cared for (depending on their level of success - custom) shoes. This is not to be confused with "I am screaming designer" shoes that many of the younger men wear thinking it makes them look like they have money.

Final suggestion?

Do not, DO NOT, DO NOT (whether it is sport coat or suit) get a jacket with a slit over the butt or slit on the sides. It looks TERRIBLE TERRIBLE TERRIBLE!!! Opt for a "European cut" which means NO SLITS in the jacket at all.

Trust me on the is one... please.

Go to Jos A Banks when they have them on sale. They have the best quality for the price.

Saying that, I have not bought a suit of the rack in 10 yrs. Get some tailored on your next trip to Asia. Much better value.

I get best results going for a mid-sized, mid-range custom tailor.

Here in Knoxville, we have an "American Clothing" store (I don't think it's a national chain). They'll sell suits in the $600-$1800 range. You can go in there and buy a very workable, custom-made suit for $1,200ish dollars.

Suits in that range look great at first, but won't last as long. If you travel much it will be dead within a year or so.

Now if you absolutely must have a suit that lasts, your only hope is Europe. I have suits I bought in the late 1990's from Amsterdam (Boss brand) that look like they just came from the store. But even then with a very strong dollar (pre-euro), those were $2,500-$3,500 suites. I bet they'd be over $5K now. They use better materials, better stitching and more components in their suits. There really is no comparison.

Go with a custom suit they will last longer and fit better. Going to an off the rack store while haveing a nice name tag will not necessarily look good on you!

In Holland I bought a couple custom suits for 300$ Hong Kong was less for wool and one cashmere suit. I have no idea why anyone would pay 3 k for a suit, our tailor makes them for 650-850 out of the finest cloth. (Umless you want to impress someone with a label while you remove your jacket and fold it label out it makes no sense.) Now I would pay 2-9 k for a pair of shoes.

Well I was recommending $1,200. If he does that, he'll have a suit he can wear for those 4x a year occasions that should last him a good 5 years. IMO all you really buy going past $1,200 is durability and if he's not going to be sleeping on airplanes or entertaining customers until 1:00 am wearing it he won't need durability.

Dude, you live in t-shirts and jeans. Why, if you have a suit that's been collecting dust for a few years, would you even think of spending that on a suit? It's pretty clear that you just want attention and want to say you have some disposable income, but whatever. Just go to The Rack and but a suit. They have Hugo Boss, Joseph Abboud, etc. They're fine and noone will honestly care what you're wearing. It's not your day to be noticed, ya know? Maybe drop $600 there and buy a ton of clothes at Walmart and donate them to a shelter. Mighty crusader for the needy.

I pay $200 / each for my custom suits. $25 each for shirts.
