Accident resulting in Shoulder Dislocation

New member
I was going for a Sunday hike in the Alps with my Wife & her parents. Basically, I ended up having a scary accident. Without getting into too many details, I lost footing and slipped off a ledge up in the mountains. I am OK and lucky I survived.

I was fortunate not to be paralyzed or to totally smash my face in as I was able to tuck my shoulder before hitting the ground so my delt absorbed the initial impact. I was then airlifted to hospital and the end result was a very deep gash to the forehead (the skull was exposed) requiring a bunch of stitches, as well as a dislocated shoulder. The doc said my muscle mass saved me from much worse damage because it acted as a suit of armor for the rest of my body. The pain of a shoulder dislocation prior to it being reset is very intense tho!! Yikes!!

So anyhow, this injury leads me to some questions:

Have any of you suffered a dislocated shoulder?

Will I likely, in time, be able to recover 100% and still be able to train as hard as I did before this injury in both bodybuilding & jiu jitsu?

Would any low doses of AAS help this injury heal better? What about keeping up my high protein/vitamin/nutrient intake?

I am willing to be patient and take as much time as I need for a proper recovery. Sorry for all the questions and my nervous rambling here bros, but while I look at the bright side having survived this, I am feeling very bummed out because it is very humbling to have to have people do almost everything for you. Not to mention I am sure you all know how much athletics means to you all and having that taken away for the summer just plain sucks. (my arm is to be immobilized in this sling for 4 weeks, then I am to undergo rehab/physiotherapy... approx 10 weeks off sports!! :( )

Any helpful advice would be the highlight of my day..

Thanks all...

firstly, glad you got lucky and didnt really fuck yourself up.
i dislocated my shoulder about 2 years ago, so i know its not a very pleasant experience. now im a paramedic and i see them all the time!
you will be able to train hard again, in time, after your physio you will have to start working out the shoulder with very light weights, gradually getting the strength back in the shoulder.
the only thing i can think to watch out for, is that with dislocations its often the case that the affected joint becomes slightly more susceptible to dislocation, each time.
although taking aas would help build more muscle mass, its not going to fix a dislocated shoulder is it? the human body really is remarkable at repairing itself, give it time. good luck on the road to recovery.

I know this is an old thread but I'd like to toss some pennies in this one.
I suffered a shoulder dislocation back a few years ago... and just a few weeks after I was in the gym. No pain... no gain ... right? I figured that lifting as much as possible would strengthen it, boy was I wrong. In turn, I did strengthen some shoulder muscles no doubt, but my Labrum suffered near irreparable damages.(i kept dislocating it.. o3 time total) Luckily I was fully medially insured and was able to get a good surgery.
If I can reccommend anything it would be Time.
Take time to let it just naturally heal, lift very light. I can't stress VERY enough.
Take time to work your legs, you'll be glad you did in the end.

Was Really hurt for a couple of weeks but NO where near what should have been

Thanks Elite fitness and Lifting ! lol

My coworker at work, her 18 year old just dislocated his for the second time.

Can anyone share what exercises and nutrition supps the rehab docs put them on? Any website to show what exercises to do to prevent it again?

ive had re constructive surgery for about 8 years now..left shoulder

take a a cable pulley and put it at elbow height, keep your elbow at a 90 degree so your arm is straight down, but your fist is in front of you.. grab the cable, light weight, and move your hand outward.. as if making an "opening" motion..

tnation has a good "shoulder training, a lost art" that has some good routines..

my advice? if it's fallen out twice and it bothers, get the surgery, do the rehab.. i never did the rehab and i can't do back squats because of the lack of flexibility..

Burpees is dead on. Also: rehab - do it and take it serious. In the long run it pays. In the short-term is it a pain and can be painful at times but stick with it. (Been there and done that with an ankle injury.)

Check into prolotherapy it will greatly speed your recovery.

for sure bro, i can't do shit with my shoulder.. sure it doesn't come out anymore but my elbows have more mobility than my left shoulder.. i haven't back squated because of it.. I hack squat with the barbell and front squat like a mad man to make up for it..

just another reason to big friggin big!

Another benefit for having big muscles! I was in car wreck several months ago while sitting in the passenger seat doing 50. after lookin at pictures of the truck, the dashboard where i hit was caved in all to way to the windshield. i only got the wind knocked out of me, and a bad scratch/bruise on my chest. no broken ribs, nothing. thanks to God and muscle mass.

once you dislocate your shoulder its always going to happen.

mine dislocated about 30 to 40 times.. and it hurts so fucking bad everytime.. my deductable is to high for me being 23 right now... Otherwise i would have surgery...

i cant really work my rear delts its came out of place twice in the gym doing that.. it looks disgusting too.

30 - 40 times???

:worried:

Your supporting ligaments and tendons in the capsule are totally fried then. Chances are your labarum is badly torn as well. Have you ever had proper physiotherapy and an MRI? At your stage however it sounds like surgery is the only practical option as it has happened way more than twice obviously, but who knows.

In my specific case the MRI reviled that my labarum is still in tact and it is my anterior portion of the capsule that is stretched. Therefore I am advised to continue my physiotherapy for another 6 weeks. (I have been doing it since June 24th) If by September (when I can start lifting again) it still feels unstable I can turn to the surgical option... So right now I am somewhat in limbo waiting to see what happens.

I am currently trying to regain my range of motion and basic strength.

The Sport Surgeon's believes I have a very decent chance getting back to weights and grappling without an operation. I don't feel as confident as he does however because everything I have read on this topic seems to point to eventual surgery. I suppose every individual case is different though, and the fact my labarum is apparently intact must count for alot.

We'll see how things progress...

Good luck bro. Glad you're ok and don't rush anything. Shoulder injuries are a bitch and can be super slow to heal, especially if you re-injure yourself, which is easy to do.
