Abs- How often do you train them and when?

Hey All,

Just wondering what some of you guys do for training abs. I do ab work 4 times a week after my regular workout. It basically consists of various crunches (usually about 300 total), and I change the routine weekly to help stimulate growth. It seems I have hit a plateau, though, and I'm just not getting to the next level. I'd love to get some input about ab routines...

Much Thanks.

I think most people dont realize that most of seeing your abs has nothing to do with how hard you work them and more with your diet. What do you mean by hitting a plateau? Your abs are only going to grow so much...if anything you probably need to cut BF% and then they will start popping.

every other day. mikediesel is right on about diet & BF but I still do feel that my waistline and abs stay smaller and tighter if I do them with this frequency.

Narkissos.. How often should i train my abs??

I get this question where-ever i turn: Abs being the showcase muscle most representative of: a highly conditioned state; and general sexiness...

This being said, the general public, as influenced by media and brainwashed by the 'no pain no gain' dogma, believes that you must annihilate them to get results.

Furthermore, a lot of 'exercise gurus' quoting a number of dubious sources claim that, because the size and composition of the muscle fibers which make up the abdominal wall, the best route to getting the results you want is to annhilate themn daily.

This couldn't be further from the truth.

Furthermore... It is simply illogical.

For the record...I don't train abs directly.

Unless there's a definate core weakness (as is a common manifestation in middle-aged sedentary individuals).. or you're training for a sport-specific purpose.. i don't think there's a reason to train 'em directly.

Why?

¤ABs are constantly firing statically to maintain postural integrity. So logically, if you strive to maintain good posture and exercise form... your abs will be working against resistance while lifting. This means that they will get overloaded... and they'll grow.

What?

You say indirect stimulation isn't enough?

I say... then you obviously haven't been training very long.

Look at athletes who train the 'Big three' lifts exclusively: Bench; squats; Deadlifts.

They're thick from head-to-toe.

Anyway.

With relation to the core question: "how regularly should you train abs?"

My answer would be in the form of another question: "how regularly should you, or do you, train other bodyparts?"

Remember the body is a sum of parts working in synergy.

Energy reserves are taxed systemically.

Thus while abs may recover relatively quickly as compared to other bodyparts, this is no reason to train them more regularly than other bodyparts.

Why flirt with the risk of dipping into the recuperative reserves to the point where it curtails recovery for other bodyparts?

With regard to the core question again: ""how regularly should you train abs?"

I say optimally twice per week... no more than that.

This is however but a generic template.

Recuperative ability differs from individual to individual... Thus in the formulation of a plan of attack, ones individual recuperative ability should be factored in.

Some people can train everything twice per week..training 6 days in a row, while still making progress.

Some people can't train anything more than once per week... and may find that training more frequently that every other day quickly leads to over-training.

Ok...

But what's this mean for the beginner.. you know, the guy or gal who has no idea who their body will respond to changes in exercise frequency?

Well basically... start at the middle of the spectrum.

Start with training abs twice per week.

If you continue to make progress... stick with it.

If overall your progress stagnates... and this state is compounded with feelings of overall fatigue; irritability, etc. then cut back. These signs are indicative of over-training.

Good luck

I belong to the school of "Abs Are Built in the Kitchen" and not in the gym although I still do 75 hanging leg raises 3 X a week. For me, to train them hard or using weights is a waste and just seems to thicken my waistline.

I absolutely agree about a good diet..I have an incredibly clean diet. My problem is with the lower abs. Before my hernia operation I had a chiseled 6 pack- mainly from all the cardio and resistance in my Martial Art training. After the operation, which was botched and needed more surgery, I put on some pounds due to lack of exercise. My lower abs just don't show anymore, even though I've worked them like crazy...I'm wondering if the mesh they put in for the hernia has something to do with it...anyway- thanks for the reply.

Hi SS. I feel for you. I had a severe umbilical hernia repair and ever since then, no matter how low my bf% goes, I can't seem to lose the fat around my mesh. Also, the cross-hatch starts showng through the skin. I take solace in the fact that at least it doesn't hurt anymore, or pops out when I do leg presses.

3-4 times a week,in an effort to keep my lower back strong,as an injury prevention.I dont have a shredded 6 pack, but belly is flat, and can see them when I flex them, good enough for me.

still is good to work them a couple times a week...i usually throw my abs in a super set just to get them out of the way...but for the most part diet diet diet!!!!!

Todoveritas-

Yeah, that's exactly it- it's the fat that seems to be around the mesh, so at least now I know it's not just me. I've worked my ass off to try and get rid of it since the operation but it's always the same. Glad to hear you're not having any problems with your lifts...I still get that burning pain when I go at it a little too hard with certain lifts...hasn't popped yet, but definitely strained it a couple of times since the op. I tell ya, trying to gauge my lifts with that in mind, coupled with my freaky wrist that constantly sprains, makes it really tough...

Nelson- thanks but nothing came up in the search...

Sorry about that bro. It's the ab exercise from my book. Can't seem to track it down on line. If anyone has it, feel free to post it.

I use the ab scissors body by jake....you can do front then the seat rotates for sides..I do 40 reps front, 40 left side, 40 right side, 40 front on the fourth out of fifth highest setting. I try for 3 times a week

the underlying Abs structure is developed immensily through Hypertrophy bodybuilding workouts without direct work.

doing Abs say 8 weeks out is an opportunity to retrieve maxim aesthetic appeal without over work.

basically an utra effeciant way to get the job done with max results.
