495 deadlift

thanks bros!!

i think that was one of my worst lifts im not even that proud of it because i looked like a fool lifting it up, but my buddy keeps sayin dont worry and make it your goal to get it up perfectly. Lol so im stoked i even got it up!

Ive never used a belt in my life, but i did use straps. I guess i could try it with chalk instead?

a deadlift suit, erector shirts, supportive briefs, wrist straps and knee wraps are all equipment that would make a deadlift not "raw" in certain federations. The belt is the wisest investment you will make. You can only lift heavy weights for so long without one.

Oh yeah and you might be able to pull 515-525 with one because of how tight you can make your core and the added abdominal pressure against the belt. It will help your arch.

One mistake on a max effort and you'll wish you hadn't.

Why didnt you just post the original vid? :/

i bought this belt only to use it for weighted dips and nothing else....would i be asking for trouble using it for dead lifts with max weight? bought it at big 5 lol wheres the good stuff at????

495 was more of a mindfuck for me than not being strong enough. Once I hit 5 plates the following week I nailed 515. Now the thought of six plates is brewing in my head, though thats a ways down the road.

Wouldnt be surprised if you add 10 lbs next week though I would get that form down first. A fucked up back ruins a lot of exercises.

no doubt. psychological blocks and breakthroughs at every hundred pounds and plate interval are common. I wouldn't pull a weight like that with a rounded back and no belt again though bro. Put on a belt at about 400 and get the feel for it. Give it another session before maxing.

Iv pulled up 550lbs and it felt like a house!!! That will be going up bigtime soon though! Straps IMO is not a true max, belts are fine though.

+1 straps are for gays

sorry southern lord :D

only thing i ever used straps for is rippetoe shrugs

I use a leather BBing weightbelt all the time. The feed back it gives you to maintain a arched back and tight core is invaluble

I use straps all the time too. Id rather not hold back my development due to my grip strength giving out

lol

I can hook grip 405 for a triple. I only use straps on shrugs and I only wear a belt on heavy triples and singles. My grip is not my limiting factor :)

good! I thought you had started to just use straps on all deads now.

I also only wear a belt on singles for squats and dead like you. I need to start gettin back into hook grip again...

If you put a wrap of elastic athletic tape around your thumbs it really helps with your hook grip. I started doing that when I started tearing the callouses off my thumbs.

Straps are fine. Grip strength is over rated to a degree. Deadlifting with a double overhand grip is great and better for the spine. We would use this grip until 8 weeks out then go to using the reverse grip without straps.

And I would disagree with that statement to a degree. :)

I am pretty old school - I fully admit that. For example, I don't care what you can squat from a monolift. If you can't walk it out, you can't squat it.

The same goes for deadlift. If you need straps, the bar is too heavy for you. Don't get me started with shrugs, lat pull downs, or chins ;)

Why did you upload a video of a video? :)

Well my point is reverse grip deadlifting is bad for the back. So using a double overhand is safer BUT you cant do as much. So that was why you didnt use the reverse grip until closer to the meet.

Shrugs? Romanians Deads? I dont care. If you want to use straps then use them. Unless you are on a platform who cares. ;)

Being a strongman heres my view on straps. Use them sparingly. I use them on things like pulldowns just because my forearms seem to go first on those and i cant get the full potential of the exercise. Deads i only use them if i am going for a max and then only sometimes. In competition if straps are allowed you a damn right i am going to use them, why tire myself out for later events just to look like a tough guy? I think as long as you train grip and its strong then use straps when you want but you shouldn't rely on them and have a weak grip becuase of it.

So i dont want my big 3 to suffer because of my grip, And i just started the 5x5. What if use chalk and use a one hand over/one hand under grip? Will that work my grip

Chalk adds 20% to all lifts :D

Learn the hook grip. The easiet way to do this is by pulling all your rows, cleans and your DL warm up sets with the hook. Use an alt grip with your DL work sets.

I agree 100%

I used chalk for the first time last night. Amazing!! No ripped calluses. The bar stayed put until I let go of it. Won't DL heavy without it now.

Yeh, I'd be interested in trying chalk too....never really used chalk or straps or hand wraps etc....and I hate when people use gloves to lift...it's just fuckin gheigh

You know, I went to REI and got it. I got the stuff in the bag because they were out of the block. There was a gymnastics studio right by REI and was able to get a block there. I did some searching on the net and found REI. I usually don't like REI because I get weird looks and the people are all pissy. I think it's because I don't look like I live on granolla, think global warming's a joke, and have to take up two "compact" parking spots with my dually truck. :) Good luck!

I got the Metolius one with the Super Grip chalk. Sat the bar down after deads and walked away with the bar. Incredible stuff :)

One of the posted rules in my gym is "no chalk". The metolius ball I posted pics of is non marking so i can get away with it. I've already been through three of these balls in as many months. Awesome investment for my training.

I am interested in giving the hook grip a go now. And glad, yes it won't feel to good your first go around but you will get used to it and quickly become a favorite. Your grip strength should not be as strong your first couple times because it will be uncomfortable. This is what a couple pals have said that use hook grip.

Here you go.

Its an online store run by Karl Gillingham. He's a pro strongman, his brother Brad is currently IPF #4 SHW, and his other brother Wade is a pro gripper and arm wrestler.

The whole site has stuff that works, and is at good pricing.

I am more interested in arm wrestling than anything else. I competed in local championships in Lebanon in armwrestling. Won one and got 2nd twice and 3rd once. Lebanon has some big mofos with rediculous strength.

I wonder where you can train for arm wrestling in toronto.

Thanks for the link broheim. Much appreciated.

bro I hated the 5x5 program. I have 3 weeks left but I gave it up. too boring plus my training partner isn't the best partner to have. hopefully it goes better for you.

Hey do you guys know of any good lifting belts that are under $50? My deadlift is stalled because I'm worried about my lower back and want to get a belt. Thanks.

Dont order from inzer those mother fuckers took so long to get me a lever belt that was instock. They don't communicate with the customer at all i had to call and badager them and then they were like ok we'll ship it out today about 2 weeks after i placed the order.

I will admit that I have heard sporty stories like this. My experiences with them have not been this way though.

Caveat emptor.

So I'm thinking of either of these 2:

APT Pro Gear - Weight Lifting Belt Tapered Blue Suede 10mm X 4" Small Front
Inzer Advance DesignsDetailed Information

The one from inzer is a full 13, while the one from pro is 10mm. However the one from pro is on sale for $33 vs $40 for the other. Normally I'd think that $7 would be worth it for the extra thickness, but can I trust inzer? Sorry to jack your thread gladiator but it is kind of on topic.... Any opinion on these two and the sites would be great. Thanks for all the help:)

Whereas I am not a big fan of John Inzer I do enjoy the quality of his products. I've had great service from them even when having to return items. I'm on my third inzer belt now after outgrowing my first two and wanting to switch to the lever belt. I've done powerlifting and strongman contests for several years now and can always count on my inzer gear to perform at a high level.

Cheers,
Scotsman
