495 deadlift

If you put a wrap of elastic athletic tape around your thumbs it really helps with your hook grip. I started doing that when I started tearing the callouses off my thumbs.

Straps are fine. Grip strength is over rated to a degree. Deadlifting with a double overhand grip is great and better for the spine. We would use this grip until 8 weeks out then go to using the reverse grip without straps.

And I would disagree with that statement to a degree. :)

I am pretty old school - I fully admit that. For example, I don't care what you can squat from a monolift. If you can't walk it out, you can't squat it.

The same goes for deadlift. If you need straps, the bar is too heavy for you. Don't get me started with shrugs, lat pull downs, or chins ;)

Why did you upload a video of a video? :)

Well my point is reverse grip deadlifting is bad for the back. So using a double overhand is safer BUT you cant do as much. So that was why you didnt use the reverse grip until closer to the meet.

Shrugs? Romanians Deads? I dont care. If you want to use straps then use them. Unless you are on a platform who cares. ;)

Being a strongman heres my view on straps. Use them sparingly. I use them on things like pulldowns just because my forearms seem to go first on those and i cant get the full potential of the exercise. Deads i only use them if i am going for a max and then only sometimes. In competition if straps are allowed you a damn right i am going to use them, why tire myself out for later events just to look like a tough guy? I think as long as you train grip and its strong then use straps when you want but you shouldn't rely on them and have a weak grip becuase of it.

So i dont want my big 3 to suffer because of my grip, And i just started the 5x5. What if use chalk and use a one hand over/one hand under grip? Will that work my grip

Chalk adds 20% to all lifts :D

Learn the hook grip. The easiet way to do this is by pulling all your rows, cleans and your DL warm up sets with the hook. Use an alt grip with your DL work sets.
