3x5 to 5x5: when to switch?

Guys - i had been rehabbing a shoulder injury for a while and came across the 3x5 towards the end of my rehab. I started the 3x5 the first week of January and it has been great. However, I have gotten myself back into "lifting shape" and feel like I could move on to the 5x5.. Is there any set amount of time you're supposed to stick with the 3x5 or do you just move up when you feel you're ready? I was thinking about sticking with 3x5 until March, but just wanted some opinions. Thanks, Andy

If you are still increasing and making gains DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING.

When you get stuck read "Practical Programming."

There's the argument that if it's still working for you then don't change a thing. It's a very good argument and it's the sensible approach.

On the other hand, everyone suffers a little from ADD and the need to change things up or enjoy a little more volume. Mostly we lift for enjoyment and if you feel that you'd enjoy the change then switch. So long as you're aware of why you're switching then it's a reasoned decision and you can accomodate the folly as you move over by making larger than the 'standard' 2% - 2.5% weekly jumps when you feel you have some slack.

Don't switch simply because you feel you've done your service on any given level, though. While the 3x5 is still working for you as advertised, it's the better program for you.

Thanks, I think I'll stick with it for another month or two and see if I keep progressing as I'd like

There is nothing wrong with what BW said, but keep in mind that you will progress faster on the 3x5 as long as it is working. There are instructions in PP on HOW to tweak it when it stalls.
