i took the horse down to beaver creek ohio for a nice short little trail ride to kinda get him a little bit of a workout..

well as soon as we pulled off onto a road through the woods you could hear them.. the fucking woods were alive..

this is one strong fucking brood i tell ya.. while they were mostly within the first 100yds of the woods from any wood line.. there were still quite a few deeper in. and i mean trees and tall grasses were just black with them.. the ground was moving.. the air filled..

oh.. and what's even more weird.. there were no birds to be seen.. you'd think birds from all over would be there gobbling these fat fucking flies up.. but i didn't see one..

frickin creepy yo.

anyone else experiencing strong periodical cicada brood populations where they're from??

Nothing here..yet.

actually.. those are probably real locust..

the "17-year locust" is actually a misnomer.. as they're not truly locust.. but rather a member of the cicada family..

more like this.

Several years ago I was going to a baseball game on a military base. We were riding down a main road and then turned off onto a side road in the woods. The road was completely covered with locusts. You could here them crunching under the tires. You know how when you ride through mud it splashes up onto the side of your car right behind the tire? Well, the car was covered with locust juice right there. Disgusting.

I've never experienced that but I'm sure it would freak me out. A few weeks ago there was a bug on my desk and that upset me a lot. I wouldn't even sit at my desk. After 10 minutes of standing as far away from my desk as possible and answering the phone by reaching way over to it, I finally had someone come by my desk to rescue me. He bravely killed it for me. I felt really stupid.

one time I was at the Pipestem resort in West-By-God-Virginia and it was cicada season (although I was young and naive and called them "chaquitas") and we were on a nice walk out enjoying the... whatever one enjoys on walks.
so I'm cruising along, jumping and hopping and groping myself the way kids do, and I look down and HOLY SHIT!! there is a cicada there wth two heads! one on the right, and one on the left, and they met up at their asses. I thought that was pretty cool and picked it up and was checking it out.
then the two gave me a dirty look and flew off into the air.

I'm pretty sure they were doing some sort of "sex" thing and I totally busted that up.

also, I used to pick them up and bring them to an area where they had a snapping turtle and I'd feed them to him. he seemed to like them. he also liked broom handles and fingers.

I wonder how the cicadas kill time during that 17 years in between. I bet they do a lot of reading. I know I would. Maybe even do the cross word puzzles in the Cicada Newspaper.

maybe..

that shit is pretty crazy when you think about it...

there are actually 17 different broods.. a different one coming out each year.. some are larger than others.. and some are stronger in some areas than in others..

this year's brood will mate and lay eggs and die..

the larva that hatches will burrow into the ground, where they will live for the next 16.5 years feeding on roots of trees..

what a life.. live as a baby for 16.5 years.. crawl out and hatch and fly around for 6 weeks, fuck once, lay your eggs.. then die..

cicada
All summer long on our property they are a screamin with that high pitched noise..

Nonstop.. What's freaky is if they all go quiet at the same time.
I'm thinking "all right now, what's coming up behind me outa the woods" ?
