75th - you are one of the smartest dudes here but this, just like the ocean floor collapsing is one of the dumbest articles I have ever seen.
I don't have the numbers, but the earth emmits 1,000x more methane every day in the ocean naturally. It is so large, that they think if they can figure out how to mine methane hydrates, it can give us an almost unlimmted amount of energy
DOE - Fossil Energy: DOE's Methane Hydrate R&D Program
The amount of Gas BP is releasing into the ocean is miniscule in comparison. They think BP is releasing in the range of 50,000 mcfd of gas. That is less gas than one small suburb of Chicago burns a day during the winter. In addition, most of the gas is being collected and flared on the surface.
AND - ultimately, as this field is developed and gas is collected, it would, in theory, reduce the amount of gas that is naturally released in the ocean due to seaps.
If these nuckle heads really wanted to worry about something, it would be the amount of gas that could be released by these hydrates melting as "global warming" heats up the oceans temperatures around the world.
