what computer brand is the best nowdays

sadly, those are about the only choices left; few more if you go the laptop route. If you go by the spec's, no real difference, just buy on price for the same setup; Dell has become a pain on maintencnce though.

I have a Lenovo. Works great for me. It's the first branded computer I've ever bought. The computers I had in the past were just no name brand customer made ones.

IMO Acer makes the least expensive top notch laptops. For desktops I use Dell and HP. I also have a Toshiba laptop I really like.

Ortiz in 3...2...1

lol

depends on what you want to do

a good laptop that's up and coming and getting sweet reviews nowadays is acer

I have a HP pavilion which has a faulty cpu which causes excessive overheating issues
dell and apple had the same problem with the nvdia chips, HOWEVER they stood behind their products and backed the warranty on the issue for three extended years
HP is trying their best to avoid it and trying to charge people 400 to replace the motherboard with THE SAME FAULTY CHIPS lolol

Desktops, I'd search around ebay for a reputable seller and get quad core processor, at least 4 gigs of ram (for vista, you really want W7 which comes out in OCT)

If it was me I'd wait till October

& start searching on ebay "custom desktop quad core"

lol@ dell
I have about 4 in my family including my current desktop
they suck
their CS support sucks worse

not to mention the bloatware useless crap HP and Dell install on all their systems

dell is terrible, just seems to run slow and never works right or fast enough

HP/compaq - you can get excellent deals. i own 2 of these and never had a problem (1 compaq, 1 hp). i am very pleased with their performance i grabbed them both at different times from staples when they were about 350 each

heard good things about acer as well

the best is def packard bell

llolololz @ the last one

Sonys are great but the good ones are a fortune like apple, in the 1700+ range, however the models under that I find you are overpaying for, based on the specs.

To build yourself or you need someone who can do the task.

All parts should be bought at tigerdirect.com and newegg.com

If your buying a laptop you need to buy brand name

Desktop, def go custom build

which are you looking for lap or desk?

A lot of companies I visit are stock full of HP's. Simple reason: they're the most reliable and stable. And since I have a HP and it's on 24/7 and never had a single hw problem since I bought it. I wul dhave to agree.

Now the vista o/s.... :)

i build my own desktops which are soo much better than the ones you buy in store. The ones in store put the basic crap on there just so it will run. Usually shitty ram and hard drive

Can you build a million of them, and build it less than $500?

i'm in the computer business. here's a tip- best place to buy a computer these days? walmart. their low prices are causing a buzz.

Im thinkin on getting one of those lil Acer notebooks at Wally World. Like 280.00

I have two laptops. A big Toshiba and one of the little Acers. I got a memory upgrade for the Acer and it is awesome and in many ways better for me than the Toshiba. I do not play games but it is smaller, less expensive, has a longer battery life etc. Memory is dirt cheap too. I got mine on sale for $229. I could have purchased four of them for the cost of my Toshiba.

I know. I want the blue one.

There is no "best".

Of the consumer brands, it's mostly a matter of selecting the lesser of several evils.

If it's a desktop system, build your own.

is it still dell and hp?
To answer your question, they are not necessarily the best but here are the sales figures for 2008, this includes cell phones as "computers" as well hence Nokia is at the top

Nokia 64.1 Million units 13.8% market share
HP 55.2 Million units 11.9% market share
Dell 43.8 Million units 9.4% market share
Apple 35.0 Million units 7.5% market share
Acer 30.8 Million units 6.6% market share
Lenovo 22.1 Million units 4.7% market share
RIM 19.8 Million units 4.2% market share
Toshiba 12.9 Million units 2.8% market share
Others 181.9 Million units 39.1% market share

It also depends what you want to do with your computer. I'm guessing you asked the question because you don't know how to build your own. Having been a Dell Certified Technician and HP Certified Technician from a previous job, I can tell you both have spotty customer service, it really depends on who you end up talking to and if they want to help you that day. Both Dell and HP have entered the Gaming market too so they don't just do work regular desktops and laptops they are making PC's for every genre.

Dell acquired Alienware in 2006 which use to be at the top of the PC gaming market along with Falcon Northwest: Falcon Northwest Computer Systems, The Ultimate Gaming PCs.

If you have money to burn go with Falcon. When I'm at work I'll visit their site just to loop their chill music in the background

You all know, every computer maker, including you build at home types, use the same parts that come from the same province in china right? :)

Computer Manufacturer = Company (or person) who gets stuff from china, puts their name on it, and puts it together. What sets them apart is : 1) service 2) bios 3) integration with operating system 4) price 5) warranty 6) case 7) corporate discounts 8) tweaking (if you buy a gaming machine) and 8) how well they're put together.

Ya, for regular every day folks its much better for them to have a big company to go to that has dedicated customer/technical service. You ever tried calling ASUS when you get bios error codes cause the memory that was "supported" really isn't unless you flash the bios but the damn thing isn't built yet so...ya that was fun.

I love building and problem solving so that shit is fun for me, most people want a PC to just work and browse the web and use office apps. I wouldn't suggest anyone build one unless they have prior experience.

The downside with 'small guys' is when things go bad and you want a return or replacement.

They don't want to take a $$ hit so they'll fight u tooth and nail on the return, or want to take it in and try to fix it first and then give it back to you in 1 week later (x10 if they're middle eastern owned). I have friends who bought from those small compuer places and have nothing but horror stories when they had problems and went back and had 30 min bitch fights. Instantly the look on their faces change.

With dell, I called, got an rma and next day I already got a hard drive sent to me -- even before I sent out my old one! Dell's c.s. is badass, and no wonder they win over so many corporate accounts. Not to mention their site has everything you'd ever want. I just like HP cuz it's best bang for the buck.

Word. Most geeks build their own, but most people aren't geeks. If you want a 'dummy proof' computer, buy an imac :)

1. If everything on a Mac just works, then why does a website called "Mac fix it" exist, assholes? Here are a few choice topics on macfixitforums.com:

-Login window stuck!
-lower caSe "S" key not working!!
-Menu bar keeps flashing
-I can't drag and drop!

Waaaah, boo hoo! I can't drag and drop! Dumbass. Looks like your Macs aren't perfect after all, which leads me to my second point:

2. Fuck you.

I don't know why Mac users get so defensive when you call them idiots. I mean, Apple is a company that has built its entire user base around the fact that its users can't do simple things like turn their computers on. Hell, most Mac users can't even talk without using their hands, which ranks their intelligence somewhere between a simian and hog shit:

el o fvckin el!

wrong
I have an HP

first of all so many people buy HP and Dell because they have most of corporate america cornered. Go to the Dr., Secretary has a dell optiplex. Actually all the nurses do to, along with administrators etc, same with HPs.
That is the reason their #'s are super inflated

second of ALOT people who have owned previous HPs (loyal die hards) are pisssed

HP Lies: The nVidia Defect
go there, you might think twice about giving 1K-2500K to them if they treat theeir customers like these people. To boot, those are only a fraction, most have no clue it's a "defect" and just get another one.
I take it you didn't buy a dv series

i'm very familiar with what corporations use - that's the business i'm in... taking in large lots of computers from fortune 1000 companies.
Dell and HP are probably tied, with HP being more popular for desktops and HP's more popular for laptops.

lol @ defects. Windows has a billion defects past 15 years - I bet you run it!

HP/Dell - Why do corporatiosn use them?

1. Cost
2. Support
3. Tech Folks already trained on them
4. Quick next day turnaround on parts
5. Consultants who can come in and install servers and connect to mainframes and wans.

are just SOME of the reasons. Has nothing to do with 'cornering'. NO ONE has gotten fired form their exec job by recommending Dell or HP. CEO of Citigroup is not gonna recommend Joe's ABC computer shop on 34th and 5th ave.

And yes macs are for idiots. But then again most of america are idiots when it comes to computers, so it fits perfectly.

Yeah, but you can be sure that a factory-assembled system won't have a motherboard with as many features or slots as the usual quality aftermarket board.

lol..

Dell ties it up for being an awesome paper weight.

that's what most HP Laptops(what I own)are

pieces of shit

lol@ dell selling one for 499 as their "value brand" where you can get a sick acer for 399 with better specs
sheep america
pwned

I work in the computer industry and I an tell you very well that most desktops are a rip off, you should definetely build it urself, if you dont know shit as to how to do this buy one of those small form factors/atx/bot PCs at your local walmart, bestbuy, etc, if you hvae intermediate skill buy a barebones kit at tigerdirect.com
Laptops is a whole other story... HP hs many issues with bad graphics cards and deffective LCDs, compaq and gateway are pretty shitty all over, hardware and case, ibm are sturdy but not that tchnology packed, Dells are pretty good, reliable, easy to use and cheap, alienware's are pretty expensive but almost 80% of the hardware is upgradable so the investment is sometimes worth it depending you line of work, mac arent really compatible with much and the software is pretty unstable, hackable, sony vaio are pretty cool looking and have neat features but arent that awesome hardware-wise, fujitsu, asus and acer are gaining territory with nicely packed laptops, but most are mini, few are higher than 14"

Does Sony still have issues with flaky drivers for proprietary hardware? And slow to bring out driver updates and bug fixes?

i was just saying though they will charge more b/c it says HP on the side of it. You could build the same computer for a lower price. You can also get really powerful used processors super cheap b/c of how fast they depreciate
