If straps dont work I would say you;re not using them right. For grip strength either just keep working or when you get to say your last deadlift rep, just hold it at the top until you can't hold it anymore. When I am doing a bodybuilding type routine I use wraps for any set where the numer of reps I get will be hindered by my grip. If I am lifting PL style I try not to use wraps until I really can't pick up the weight. I'm also usually doing singles or close to it with.
