Spine fucked PICS

Yep mines like that! Have an appt this week. I actually go through back spasms that compress nerves in my thoracic spine tht give me chest pain to where it feels like I can't breathe...

I went in because my migraines we're so intense I couldn't see. I have been going to an amazing chiropractor who showed me how important your spinal alignment is. After 6 months of getting adjusted 3times a week, I went from 2 migraines a week to 1 or less a month. I changed nothing else in my lifestyle. My neck went from a 20 degree curve to a 40. I just wanted to share my story and encourage everybody to look into chiropractic. Even if you think you don't need it.

So what's the diagnosis on that xray and is that a before or after your chiro treatments. (Non plat can't blow up the pic).

Chiropractors usually makes things worse glad to hear yours did a good job but you should really go to an orthopedic doctor and see what he recommends I can guarantee he will say stay away from chiropractors

this is actually very true.

a good chiropractor sees you a couple times then cuts you loose. seeing one frequently is just him using you to make his kids college payments in most cases.. JMHO but also based on the research i've done

they make the bulk of their money off accident victims and clean house through the person at faults auto insurance company.. for athletes who have issues the chiropractor isn't necessarily a good choice, same goes for massage therapists who actually cause muscles to TIGHTEN up, not loosen up. massage therapists are nice to go to once in a while but don't make it a habit if you are a lifter as they can make problems worse

Inversion table for sure :)

everyone on here who lives at the gym should invest in one of these. a starter table is under 200 bucks and it is tremendous at stretching out our bodies to de-compress everything. no excuse for not atleast buying a starter table and using it 2-3X per day

Yea we can get them prescribed to us in the army if we see a specialist typically a chiropractor can prescribe us one they don't like to but...it can be done. I need to get one for sure!! Steve you sound like you own one :p

I don't agree with all the Chiropractor hate. I've had some good experiences, and some really bad experiences with them. At best, they have high tech equipment and techniques and will do very much of the same types of therapy as a physical therapist. At worst, they give you BS stories about how messed up you are, and try to get you to sign long term contracts to suck you dry.

I have also never heard anything bad about massage. I guess I'll have to read up on it, but myofacial release is a pretty accepted therapy. I hardly ever get massages, but use a good massage chair at work and use a foam roller mainly for my middle and upper back, and find it really helps loosen me up, reduces numbness in my hands, and keeps me from getting tight during the night so I wake up feeling much looser.

I totally agree with the benefits of inversion. I hang upside down like grandpa munster all the time.

yup to anyone interested just go on amazon and there are plenty for under 200 bucks. good starter tables.. once you get the hang of things (no pun intended) you can always invest in a more expensive one later on.

you can also use it to do ab exercises and such

chiropractors are actually similar to dentists in my experience unlike medical docs.. for the MOST PART they care about you and want you to see them as little as possible. dentists we have all experienced who have hammered us on flossing and brushing not because they want our teeth to have issues so we will go back but because they want our teeth to NOT have issues. which is my point which if a dentist or a chiro is seeing you frequently then that is a major red flag. they both should see you on occasion.. (ideally for a dentist twice a year knock on wood just for cleanings)

with massage therapists when you get deep tissue massages that can actually cause injuries, and cause your muscles to TIGHTEN UP, not loosen up. again as a lifter specifically you want to be careful not to cause more compression and tightness which massage therapists can actually cause.. it just depends on who you go to. if you have a tendon issue for example and she massages it then it can actually delay healing, you want to leave the tendon alone to heal and not bother it, same goes for a torn muscle which some would recommend massaging to reduce swelling.. but that will only delay recovery believe it or not.

I agree completely. I have a friend who's a chiropractor and he agreed that the ones that want your $$ will just keep wanting to see you. Him on the other hand, he wants to "cure" the problem and hope that you don't come back. Maybe it's a fault of his, because he doesnt make a whole lot of money lol.

All I know guys is IM going in once a week , paying 80 a month. I feel great every time I get adjusted. It sure as hell beats paying 20$ a pill every time I get a migraine. My posture is way better I just feel overall better. Whether it works or not idk, but it sure as hell helped me

That sounds totally believable to me. It sounds like you found a good guy and good price so stick with it. I know that my body obviously tightens up sometimes, and some kind of relief is needed.

If you go to a chiro or PT or masseuse, and your joints are popping and you feel things loosening up and blood flow increasing and tingling where you didn't even know you had numbness, then you know something good is happening.

80 a month is 960$ a year bro everyone is telling you see them on occasion u need to look at an orthopedic as I stated before I am coming from experience I went to a chiropractor for 3 years and did more bad than good I ended up needing a spinal fusion at the end of it and my doctor told me if I would of came earlier I could of prevented it... At least make a visit

How much does it cost to go to a orthopedic doctor and what do they do to fix you? How did your chiropractor make things worse?

I couldn't tell you an exact number on price it depends if you have insurance or not it shouldn't be no more than a hundred dollars and the doctor said the chiropractor all they do is "adjust" your spine in "the correct way" usually makes things worse and the doctor can give you a brace or special shoes look online there a lot of forums to help people out

Yea medical docs don't usually think much of chiropractors. And its true that for every good one out there, there are 10 bad ones

lol, some of you chiro bashers sound like you are regurgitating rhetoric that was spewed from MD's back in the 40's through the 80's, stemming from an AMA conspiracy against chiropractors ranging from as far back as the 1920's that lasted even into the 90's. They called chiropractic a "cult" LOL! No surprise to find that attitude is still around somewhat today. It wasn't until 1980 that the AMA was forced by the court to change it's ethics code so that an MD could accept a referral from a chiro or refer to a chiro. After many legal battles though, chiros won in court against the AMA, finding them guilty of an illegal conspiracy against the chiropractic profession. That was in 1987 and finally upheld through US Court of Appeals and the US Supreme Court in 1990. Get with the times bros. You old skoolers! Chiro has proven itself safe and effective for the last 100+ years. You are the same guys that criticize bros for using "old school PCT methods" from the 80's and 90's. Ironic isn't it?

I've used chiro and massage, and I've not used them. IME, while using them, I've felt better than while not using them...as a lifter, and just in general. Have I been messed up by them in any way? LOL! No. I guess I've found some good ones huh? If you are going in after some kind of trauma (car accident or fall, etc.) and have issues like you see in that film for example, then they will usually want to see you 3 times a week for say 8-12 weeks, then they re-evaluate and might want to see you once or twice a week for another 8-12 weeks and re-evaluate again then.

I've seen chiros before who have said that I didn't need to see them, but if I wanted to, I could come in for adjustments once a week or every other week as maintenance. They weren't trying to lighten my pockets unnecessarily. At least they will usually recommend a non surgical approach to treatment first. An ortho surgeon will likely end up recommending surgery for that back. After that, you will need more and more surgeries as time goes on. People that have those surgeries always end up needing more surgeries to fuse neighboring vertebrae. They always have pain and discomfort too. I'm one of those people that have worked in the medical profession. Bottom of the barrel types, right Steve? ;)

If I can delay surgery and have less to no pain and live a normal life with chiropractic treatments and massage, I will choose that, thank you. Ruin a spine? Bah. Keep listening to those orthos. Chiros receive extensive musculoskeletal training, moreso MD's and even DO's. Where MD's and DO's diverge off into learning about drugs and surgeries, DC's learn more about the musculoskeletal system. If I need drugs or surgery, I'll go to an MD.

^^^ I play poker with a bunch of docs (home game) and yes they hate chiro's like poison this is true and they don't consider them 'real doctors' whatever that means. however it is true if you keep getting frequent adjustments you will be 'hooked' and have to keep going back. this is the problem. once every month or two is one thing.. but going there every week or two he is definately lining his pocket with your hard earned cash (or your insurances) .. some chiro's have a nice little scam going, I know cause when I was younger and had insurance the chiro kept having me go back over and over again and i would get temporary relief for a day or two then the pain would just come back. it wasn't until I started stretching, got a better bed/chair that my condition improved 10 fold. i have been to many chiro's and they have pretty much thrown me out after 2 or 3 times seeing them, but there are plenty of bad apples that will insist you keep coming back and have you hooked.

thats what I and others on here are saying. thats with any service type job whether it be hookers, other doctors, vets, restaurants or whatever.. they want you to keep coming back not once every quarter but once every week, their survival depends on it!! so i'm not singling out chiro's at all. my dentist chewed me out when i went to see him cause i wasn't taking good enough care of my teeth and I do mean chewed me out bigtime. it was so amazing because he wanted me to take good care of my teeth so i wouldn't keep going back to him.

as for massages if you massage a tendon or ligament in theory you would be increasing blood flow to speed up recovery. however in my experience it is best to leave them alone to rest and not put pressure on them because as lifters we are already putting a lot of strain on them as it is. so using a massage therapist especially after a workout is a bad idea IMO. but hey if it works for you then thats great.

i have found the best strategy is the use of an inversion table and daily stretching/yoga to handle all my neck and back issues to de-compress everything in the body that is being compressed when lifting. i would encourage everyone to do that first before spending money on chiro's and massages.

idk, the hubs went to my orthopedist, who referred him to a neurosurgeon (yikes) for a bulging lumbar disc bluge that was severe enough he couldnt walk ..not from the pain per se but the muscle weakness from the muscle weakness
his spine is otherwise very healthy (lucky bastard) the neurosurgeon wanted him to no longer lift , did NOT refer him to pt and wanted to jump to cortisone injections
I mentioned he did deadlifts and other posterior chain work and I felt he had a core muscle imbalance...I was informed barbell training was VERY VEEEEERY dangerous and thats what got him there in the first place. I tried to explain someone walked into the bar mid deadlift and he twisted ...THATS how this happened..and asked about cortisone injections causing eventual tissue degeneration. I was asked to leave the room. I was respectful and inquisitive btw but wasn't keen on the zero pt recommendation.

Our insurance covers chiropractic care ...so I called around friends got the same recommendation from four different peoples

the chiro got him going on pt, stressed he had to lay off the barbell training for a short till he recovered and agreed to treat him for free if he still had problems AFTER insurance ran out..
guess what, after a weak of active release EVERY DAY he had an easy 60% pain reduction. after a month of twice a week "adjustments with pt" he was 90%

another month or so after that he was back in the gym and is pain free to this day.

Im not convinced there arent assholes in every area of practice and I KNOW complimentary medicine is effective.

I do like an inversion table btw..but to say its the panacea isn't correct. It can help but it can also help a stroke happen.
I recently sold mine because it became a garment hanger but did what I wanted it to do at the time..get pressure off a thoracic nerve.

oh, and the chiro didnt poo the use of NSAIDs and the muscle relaxants he was prescribed
he felt theyd help get things back where they needed to be
which I find ironic really.

Im all for correcting the actual problem...not putting band aids on shit or covering it with drugs

Do the doctors you play poker with know that you don't think they're worth a shit?

Lol!

yes we have had some heated discussions. however they for the most part agree with me and i've brung up specific docs i have dealt with and they have laughed and said "yeah you are right that guy is an idiot" .. I will never forget the time i went in for a normal checkup and waited about 2 hours in the waiting room and in comes "fat doctor" in a rush through the door carrying who knows what. I was like "this can't be the doctor, no way" she was literally 300 pounds. once i get in i get naked and put on the gown and wait another hour for fat lady to get to me. she comes in and starts lecturing me how I should practice religion and pray on a regular basis because that is important for my health.. fat lady then claims the lipoma on my side is part of my ribs and is normal. i tell her she is wrong and that is a lipoma fat. she plays with it some more and tells me "hmmm.. it moves!! maybe we should have this checked out, how is your insurance?" I look at her dumbfounded.. fat lady then sticks her finger up my ass and then tells me I am healthy which means something is wrong with me because no one that comes in is ever completely healthy. i leave and get billed about 300 bucks for 5 minutes of what I feel is an episode of punked

now I have nothing against fat people at all. but if you are a doctor you shouldn't be obese, and you damn well should not be lecturing someone else on top of that

the response i get from them is always "but yeah medicine is different" ... so pretty much to me that means "yeah we don't know what we are doing, lets just guess and throw some drugs at the problem and come back in 2 weeks to see me"

there are good docs, but good luck seeing them if you have shitty/no insurance or if you don't know them personally. you are lucky you haven't had bad experiences with doctors, maybe its cause you live in S. Cali I dunno. however I hope you never have something major happen to you and have a doctor fuck you up more/ mis diagnose you like I and many people I know have. my gf's granny just recently had mouth cancer and 2 docs she went to blew it off as nothing. she insisted it was something but no one would listen. good thing she could afford to see several docs and get several opinions. thats just 1 example, but yeah like the doc told me "medicine is different" lets just fuck with peoples lives and blame it on that.

sounds like you found a good one who treated him properly then cut him loose.

which is exactly how it should be done.

I am like the OP though (i think) i've had a curved spine all my life.. always would be the kid taken away on skilios (sp) day and re-checked.. it wasn't that bad, but it is bad enough where i can't sit for long periods of times without neck and lumbar support. from what i was told its actually an advantage when it comes to lifting (not sure if that is true) but anyway i have been to countless docs, massage therapists, acupunturists, chiro's over the years and i will probably have to deal with this forever. and having a desk job doesn't help either.

i've been able to manage it knock on wood through getting a good bed, pillow, chair, and stretching daily. i think people would be shocked at how just changing their pillow can make a difference or the way they sleep.. burn who is a crazy MFer and loves to throw around heavy shit, told me about the inversion table on here and since i've gotten it i feel so much better.. all that money i blew on chiro's, massages, etc got me nowhere (and really to be honest made me WORSE) but using the inversion table after a few days i was way better so I can only recommend what worked for me to others. reason being i believe someone with my condition needs to be de-compressed daily and stretched out. especially since I also lift which compresses me. so if i'm gonna lift on a daily basis i better de-compress too or i will be in trouble

oh I've had a few not so good experiences with MD's. A couple surgeons I'm not too fond of. Drugs and surgery. That's what MD's know. Slap a band-aid and move on for the most part. Paid on how many pt's they see, so they gotta get through them fast, ya know?

I've seen a few good chiros. Chiros, in me experience are more healthy and concerned with health and fitness than MD's. An MD will say (like Shirl said), "lifting free weights is dangerous." but a chiro will spot you on the bench. One chiro I went to was a CSCS, and a former scholarship athlete. It was due to an injury that was made better by a chiro that he decided that was the path he wanted to pursue.

Almost the same story with the chiro I see now. He was lifting doing OHP when he tweaked something in his C-spine and couldn't move his arm, couldn't turn his head the next day. He had a severely herniated disc that was putting pressure on his spinal cord. Doctors wanted to get him right into surgery of course. He saw a chiro and after one visit felt much better, with far less pain and greater mobility. After a couple months he was back to normal, lifting again. That's what swayed him to become a chiro. Both of these guys treat several pro athletes (NFL, NBA, etc.) as well.

Orthopedic surgeons want to do surgery. How else are they going to heal you? The only other trick they have is muscle relaxers and or pain killers.

In my opinion, there is no way a muscle relaxing pill is going to relax your muscles as well as proper massage or chiropractic or physical therapy. ( I think of all three as pretty much equivalent).

I've been to good orthopedists who will refer to chiropractors or physical therapists.
If they won't, then don't trust them.

And if you have been to physical therapists and to chiropractors, you will probably wonder, as I do, how one gets more respect from the medical community than the other.

My physical therapists I had when I snapped my left femur in half were awesome and very good at what they do. Actually inspired me to start school in for it...
