Lunges. Good for functional strength?

I did lunges for the first time in years this past leg day and I got sore as hell. I was wondering if you guys think that they are a good exercise for functional strength or not?
 
i wish i would have done more of them when i played football. besides squats i think they are a great move for glutes and hams.
 
yes, they are great and if you want them to be even better for functional strength, try them overhead with a barbell.....this is one of my favorite exercises

actually i have to do those for the first time on wednesday. i have done them before, just never overhead.........cant wait to see how they feel.
