I thought I had heard he had a heart attack a while ago, and was recovering. Or was that someone else?

A heart attack can put things into perspective and/or can be difficult to recover fully from. Especially in a sport like his.

I met him last August...he is a big man and his gut is fairly large now. Either way...he was impressive for sure. Seriously though...there is no way to compare today's pros with the pros of even 5-10 years ago.
