Just got off the phone with Mr. America 1967 Don Howorth.
Lots of interesting stuff but I'll just touch upon a couple of things for now.

Read it and weep.

On Drugs:

Don used 10 mgs of D-bol for 4 weeks prior to the America. Prior to that he was totally natural. Considerng how honest he was about several topics I believe this to be true. It wasn't until the middle 70's when things got crazy.

On Training:

40 sets per body part 6 days a week. Yep. FOR-TY! ( When I asked about cardio, he laughed). He admits this was overtraining but the belief was, those who have the genetics could tolerate it and those who didn't -- well, it didn't matter anyway.

On Diet For Growth:

He followed Rheo Blairs plan. Two dozen eggs a day! Plus a gallon of milk and 2 pounds of beef. THAT was the real secret to how those guys got so big and muscular. Today you have guys taking a gram a week and eating 2000 calories and they don't grow so they up their dosage. He admitted he put on some fat, but as he said; "You can't get bigger without getting a little fat." He didn't look too fat in any picture I've ever seen of him.

On Diet For Cutting:

NO CHANGE. The only difference is, he'd keep rest between sets to less than 30 seconds and train twice a day, 7 days a week.

And his total income from competing and working for Joe Weider: $0.00
He did it because he loved it.

There you have it. That's a real bodybuilder.

good post, i'm still sceptical of the dosages mentioned, but i don't have anything to refute his claims, so i'll have to believe it.

Don't know why the "low" dose d-bol part is hard to believe. He was a big, well muscled guy, but he wasn't a giant. 10 mg of d-bol is enough to up nitrogen retention well above normal.

Exactly.

Maybe if steroids were used as a last resort instead of the first it wouldn't seem so incomprensible. Don was actually defending the drug saying he felt no crash, no ill effects, loved the surge in sex drive and his bench press went up 35 pounds in 2 weeks. The only thing he didn't like was the bloat. Remember, back then there were no anti-e's or diuretics.

2 lbs of beef, gallon of milk, and 2 dozen eggs?? With that sort of diet I think the average person would look like a whale. This man must have some excellent genetics if he was always as lean as you claim.

10mgs of Ciba D-bol is a world of difference from D-bol available today. They don't make D-bol like they used to.

With 40 sets per bodypart 6 days a week I have a feeling his body wasn't exactly allocating nutrients to spare fuel stores.

Ditto. When comparing steroid results, their is a WORLD of difference between an average gym rat on 20 mg of d-bol versus the results of that same man had he been in superb condition to begin with.

thats an exellent point!

most vets who have been lucky enough to try em in the past report that today's dbols arent nearly as potent.

One time I climed Mountian Everst. You can call me and I cna verify this.

i remember reading somewhere that in the early to mid sixties there
was a meeting amongst some top bodybuilders in california where they all discused if it would be safe to go up to 2 dbol 's a day instead of one

2 pounds of meat a day your dont need creatine on that diet

Why would that be the case unless the tabs are under dosed? Do you think the actual chemical compound has changed? Besides, even if the tabs are underdose it seems that with the today's standard of 50mg/day I would think it would more than compensate for the Ciba 10mgs/day.

youre not going to like this...but i think its bullshit

if he was on the drug year round, i would say maaaaaaaaaaaaybe, but for a mere month? then going through a crash? sorry, not buying it.

Wasn't he training at Vince's around that time?

For the past few month's I've been applying a lot of the old timer methods, and a lot of things from your e-book. Cream with my protein really makes a difference, and a lot of the supplements work fantastic. I like lecithin, I feel it works well, and as you said, it's cheap!

I really do believe the old school dosages. If people worked out and ate like these guys did, they would see that juice really just is an aid, not a crutch. There was a guy on the anabolic board, saying he is a hard gainer, and *needed* 3grams a week to grow! He looked all of 200lbs, and that was being generous. And thats becoming the norm these days. I was sadly on my way to that. Then you sit back and open your eyes, and you see "fallen bro" posts, ones about heart troubles, hair falling out, etc.. And these are young guys! The big wake up call, was when a pro figure friend of mine, came in 10th at the Arnold Classic, and it was a tie! She works as a dancer to support herself, and she is a pro! She was very pretty before the juice, but her face isn't as cute these days. If thats the life of a pro, then thats sad. And the guys on these boards who take pro dosages are even more sad, because they can't even claim that they are pro, let alone a muscular body. Some look like they've never seen a gym.

If people would stop putting faith in all of these 'strength coaches', guru's and bs magazines, and actually gave some of these old timer routines and diets a try, they would see what really works. Oh, but I forgot Arnold didn't know what he was doing, Vince's ideas were nutty, and Zane was thin. Let's all go take 2grams this week, eat a big mac, and go read the latest training ideas of "catmass" or whatever other wacky names these guys come up with.

Amen bro. Couldn't have said it better.
