I do agree that these same programs created to help end up further crippling the supposed benficiaries. That's a problem with the implementing of the programs. But I still think some have to exist--just smartly.
And if they don't exist, that's fine too. (Well, I don't know about "fine", just not something I can debate at this hour!!). What I was getting at in this thread was more about attitudes than actual policy.

The whole point of having black pageants in the first place is because whites have a different view of beauty than blacks, and therefore, blacks would never, in the past, win a white pageant. Women, as late as the 70's, were judged on their beauty and capacity in the home for the most part, so being a beautiful woman opens doors that wouldn't have been opened in the first place.
The black beauty pageant began as a way to offer black women OPPORTUNITY that they wouldn't normally have.
Remember Vanessa Williams? She is mixed, like me, and that is why she was the first black Miss America or whatever.
Her beauty falls along the lines of a dark white person. Black beauty will never be understood by whites....flame away...talk Whoopi Goldberg or whatever...but there are some incredibly beautiful black women in the world who, back then, would never be recognized.
Things HAVE changed. Entertainment, hip hop and whatnot, has made blackness 'mainstream'.
Remember pop music before hip hop? Do you think that's why Michael Jackson changed his face and color?
There needs to be change...blacks suffer from inertia just like any other group. We may no longer need black pageants, BUT WE DID BEFORE.

I was just being sarcastic. I was also going to point out how segregatory (is that a word?) the Chinese New Year was. For the record I'm not hung up on race, live and let live. If people want to have events or functions based on race, then I don't want any part of it.
