Worst martial arts class ever

I think it's best to watch the eyes because many times you can figure out exactly what the opponent is going to do. sort of read his mind by his facial expressions. You'll always be able to tell if he's going to move.

not if he has a good 'poker face'
but there is no such thing as poker shoulders
if he wants to come forward with the Cross, the shoulders will move
or the Cross won't connect

yeah i get that and makes sense for the sport of boxing..

in judo we watch the hips cause he has to move those to throw you

once on the mat i kinda have to just look at everything.. but honestly i can 'feel' newaza much better then standing and done need my eyes as much to know whats going on

I think the only time it is truly beneficial to look at a guy's eyes is after you hit him with a good shot. If his eyes look like they are glaring into space, you know he is hurt and you have a couple of seconds to punce on him... The worst is when you bring your fist across his face solid and you look in his eyes, and all you see is anger and bad intentions... You know you are in for a long fight.

I figured you guys would disagree, and that's a good thing, exchanging ideas and all. question for kane: have you ever really seen a poker face while fighting? My method is "attack mode" , if i'm close enough to be hit, i'm attacking. now, if a guy is a great defender, i might be in trouble because he could counter me. this is another thing i've not seen much of..a fighter that that thrives by mainly defensive fighting. I'm not talking about pros like the gracies..but most mixed martial artists and street fights in general. I get your point tom. i've always been intrigued by judo and thought it would be a very practical style, women included.

What any good fighter will have is a wide periferal view of his opponent. You look at the eyes of a good fighter and he will have a look like he is trying to see the whole room almost. They have a stare that can take in the whole body. I learned to do this from my wrestling coach who showed me video of the top wrestlers and their stares. Its like a tiger who is stalking and circling his prey. Those who fight a lot know what I am talking about.
