If it starts falling, they can just start a new domain, new look and act like it's a "new board". It's how businesses adapt. btw: the need to interact with others via text has been around since the BBS days, so I don't think it's going away anytime soon. And cheap looking chat via your face/real name via social networking sites just ain't that exciting. Also the amount of internet users (esp foreign) is increasing at an alarming rate (ie: customer base increases).

I've seen a lot of boards change ownerships, get arrested or sources are caught and take the board down with them.... there are so many scenarios but I have had to personally say farewell to 2 home boards of mine over the last couple of years and I thought they'd be around for a long time.
