my guess, is he just broke up in a relationship of his own. We (guys) always try to "hunt" someone down to make ourselves feel better. That includes ex's. Especially if they ended on good terms.

I've been on the receiving side of this situation by my Ex wife.
I made the mistake of agreeing to meet her for a harmless friendly talk meeting.
It turned out she wanted to cry all over me and ask my forgiveness and crap.
I laughed in her face and walked out.
Kinda wish I had not returned her can, but also kinda enjoyed the laugh...
