Why is it better to run after your work out than before?

OK OK OK. I know its better to run after your work out. But my g.f is toning up. And she works out 4 x a wk. And she likes running 2 miles before her work out and then she works out for 45min. I need somone to tell me EXACTLY why its better to run after a workout than before. So i can tell her. Isn't it that if you run that much before a work out then you have no stored glycogen left for your mucles then you have nothing to build with? Well lettme know!

I find lifting weights to be more stressful then cardio so that's why i do my weight training first then jump on a treadmill for another 30 minutes. Also the training gets my heart rate going even before i start running.

if u run before you lift you are going to use all your stored glycogen, therefore whey you lift protein from your muscles will be used for energy and u will also not have enough energy. this is what i dont get though, ppl say to do it after training b/c you have used ur glycogen and u will burn fat for energy?? what do i have wrong? is it just different energy sources for anaerobic and aerobic workouts?

Interesting.... WE NEED A VET IN HERE!

it's simple really. If you run before your actual workout there is no way your intensity and strength levels will be the same. In order to build muscle, you need to tear it down with intense excercise. 30 minutes of running prior to working out will crush your glycogen levels, leaving you with a less intense workout. Plus true cardio fat burning benefits occur when glycogen levels are low or non-existant. Doing intense workouts deplete your glycogen levels, so you'd want to do workout first before doing cardio.

hope this makes sense. I'm sure the morning crew will explain it better than I have.

to maximize energy stores:

warmup 5-10 min light cardio
weight training
cardio
stretch

that would be an ideal workout IMO to maximize efforts on the weight floor and burn it up doing cardio. everyone is right on about glycogen btw.

glad to help. Are you doing cardio for the health benefits, or are you trying to lose fat. If so, another great way to lose fat is to do cardio in the morning on an empty stomach.

The theory behind this practice is that after sleeping for 8 hours, your glycogen stores are gone. So when doing cardio you'll tap into your fat stores.

Good luck

Well if you didn't notice at the begining of my post I'm talking about my g/f the whole time. She's lean but she's trying to get leaner for Spring Break. Now myself i always run in the morning on an empty stomach. And now i have her doing it also. Here Nature Boy check this out. Its pics of her. She's built good and lean but she's trying to get more toned and hard. Those pics of her are 3 monthes old, right before i got her in the gym. And she's also toned up pretty good since those pics. :p
