Why do people associate vegetarianism with good karma?

Tell me on one thing - if god really favored vegetarianism, pacifism or whatever the hell else you want to call it, then why are herbivores always on the bottom of the food chain? antelope, zebra etc?

God obviously doesn't give two hoots about eating vegetables and being peaceful otherwise carnivores wouldn't be on top of the goddamn food chain.
