Average commuter: 1 tank per week. 40 litre tank, small car.
At .80 per liter (Canada last year), $32.00 per week, $1664.00 per year.
At 1.30 per liter (today's price), $52.00 per week, $2704.00 per year.
$1000 a year is a whole lot for some people, not so much for some others. I'm sure what it will lead to is more people negotiating for gas allowances, higher mileage reimbursement, etc. We still have it good compared to Europe.
My issue is that the price of oil goes up due to speculation, it has nothing to do with the actual supply of oil that exists. Hurricane Katrina did absolutely nothing to the oil supply in the US yet gas prices doubled overnight - even though the price of crude did not. It was like the companies created artificial panic so that they could cash in.
I also hate how society just adapts eventually. We were in an uproar over .80 a liter when that happened. Then $1 hit and people freaked out again. Now it's $1.25 and people are complaining again but soon that will be the norm and society will go on. There will never be a breaking point as long as everybody just keeps complaining and not doing anything.
