MAN BEATEN WHEN MULLET IS MISTAKEN FOR TURBAN
(Reno, NV) In yet another of a series of hate crimes against Arab-Americans in the wake of the Sept. 11 tragedy, a Reno man was beaten when his mullet was mistaken for a turban by a group of intoxicated men. James Whitfield, 32, was accosted while walking home from his job at a Reno area Quickie Mart. In what appeared to be an intoxicated state, his attackers, 5 or 6 in number, hurled anti-Arab epithets while beating him, apparently mistaking his luxuriant mullet hairstyle for the traditional turban that marks followers of Islam.
Community response was swift to condemn the incident. Several community leaders called the act "hateful" and "an affront not only to Arab-Americans, but to all mullet-wearing Americans." In the wake of the incident, many mullet-wearers have either cut their mullets, or dyed them to look like an American flag in order to reduce the likelihood of someone confusing their mullet for a turban. Whitfield himself had this to say: "it's a damn shame that a man can get beaten for someone mistakin' his hair for a turban. It's also a damn shame when someone gets beaten for really wearin' a turban. Can't we all just get along?" Police are currently following up on several leads.
