The question was “why do people praise Gotti. “ Mr. Gotti represents the American dream, all be it a skewed version. But here is the son of a poor immigrant from Italy who rose from the streets of New York City to become the godfather of the Gambino crime family.

John Gotti stepped forward and captured the public’s attention in what seemed like the final gasp for the Hollywood-style gangster to leave his mark in the annals of American criminal history. Gotti became the darling of the New York media. With his habit of coming through criminal trials unscathed and penchant for expensive and fashionable attire, he became the icon of the American gangster.

If Mr. Gotti represents the American dream, then HOLD TIGHT, because we are all in a great deal of trouble. Mr. Gotti's fate led him to a dark jail cell, left him diseased, and moreover, left him alone. In other words, Mr. Gotti's ending shows us where the consequence of crime and punishment often leads one to.

John Gotti was not an immigrant from Italy and neither was his father! Although people have tried to say that it was the case.. Gotti was raised in a shitty family in new jersey and new york.. his father was a dead beat.. he begas running errands for organized crime crews in his teens..

People are in awe of his power, that is true, and I can understand that. But to call that the American dream? To me the American dream is this...

Come from lower/middle class background.

Work your ass off high school, get a scholorship to a decent school.

In college you get amazing grades and are recruited by Harvard, MIT, Yale, Northwestern, etc..

You go to grad school, party like no tomorrow.. do every drug imaginable.. work out.. bang chicks.. but still get straight A's.

Graduate and make 6 figures...

That my friend is the American dream to me.

To others it is this..

come from another country.. poor as can be..

Meet a beautiful wife.. father 5-10 children. Support them all by working 16 hours per day. Half of them go to college...

I think a more accurate description of Mr. Gotti would be to say that he represents the cult of celebrity as opposed to the "American dream."

If you are going to entertain in this debate at least be educated in your facts. Mr. Gotti was indeed a son of an immigrant with Italian decent. You are correct that his father was a deadbeat gambler but this is not pertinent to my argument. Mr. Gotti did indeed rise from the streets of NY by becoming a street thug and a gang member. He became a made man by killing an Irish thug and then never ratting out the Gambino crime family, for this he served two years in jail.

This is not my "American Dream", but it is no wonder that the story line follows the illusion of many peoples "Americans dream".
