Which car would you choose?

A 1995 Honda Accord w/ 40k or a 1995 Nissan Maxima w/ 100k on the car both at the same price. The Maxima has higher miles but is a V6 3.0 w/ leather interior, fully loaded, heated seats etc. The Accord is the 4 cyl. Which would you choose and why? Each for $6500.

honda's cost a lot to service parts wise but are amongst the most reliable cars out there so u may never have anything terminal happen to it

do you need the extra grunt? the accords in the past havent looked great, nissans arent famed for their looks but im dsure it would look better

basically if u wanna impress, the nissan

reliablity and functionality and maybe cost in the long run (lower mileage, no repairs, fuel consumption), the honda

HONDA

Personally - I wouldn't choose either used car.

For $6500 I'd lease a new Honda for $215-250 a month and put the remaining $5500 or so in a money market savings account - but that's just me.

lol - out of those two choices - you pick a different one. nice.

incidentally, if you like the Jag X-Type, I hope you also like Ford Torus, b/c that is what you are buying, just with a different body and the all wheel drive option

First, I only buy imports so good that you aren't going American cars since they tend be below average in terms of quality.

I'd go with the Honda. My dad has an Acura, made by Honda, with over 200,000 miles on and he's never had any trouble whatsoever with that car.

I know many others who believe ACURA/HONDA's to be some of the best cars on the road.

Honda hands down. i'm looking for one now. my friend who is a Mechanic at Nissan, drives a Honda. Hmmmm !

Oh yeah, My dad and Uncle both have Honda's, and both have over 250k miles. Yahoo has a website dedicated to Honda lovers.

Why in the world would you do that? In 3 years your lease would cost you above $9000.00 and you have nothing but a car to return. I would imagine the 95' Accord will still be driving fine.
So you lost money there. Then the money market thing... why in the world would you put money into something that doesnt even keep up with inflation. At the end of 3 years you would have all of 6200.00 that would be the equivalent of 5100.00 in todays money at an assumed 50 year average inflation rate. So you actually lost money on that deal. Money markets are a place to put money for the short term while you reallocate.

Leases are for people who dont drive over 20000 miles per year and have to have a new car. Granted there are other factors but thats the general case.

In any case, dont do this.
-Velvett, a car salesman throw that pitch on you?

Buy the Accord. Buy the accord. Buy the accord.
I'm all about nice cars but a 95 is a 95 I dont care if it has leather and a V6. for $6500 the accord is the smart money on this deal.

Thanx spiderbaby and everyone else. Velvett must be a wealthy guy. I gave a verbal tongue lashing to my sister whom lease a car for 36 months. When it's over, she wants to buy a car. I say over 5k down the drain.

I agree totally. I would never buy American cars...and the only imports to stay away from are Mits..they are pieces of crap!!!
(Speaking from too much experience)

If you had to choose between the honda and the nissan, I would choose the honda.

In my experience, honda makes more aftermarket parts as upgrades than Nissan, or maybe they are just marketed more,.

They are both reliable cars but honda's reputation for being solid and producing long-lasting cars is indistinguishable.

good luck!

Spiderbaby,

All good points but I wouldn't buy a used car unless it were to be a second car or if I were in high school or college and I just need something to get around. (Specifically because I don't know who drove the car before me, its accident history or service history - it's a personal hang up.)

I leased my current car, not a Honda but a vehicle that is known to keep it's value through age & mileage. I write off my lease and my car servicing and loaner car are as well included. I am happy with it and it has been working out for me.

Mike,

You always come to this board for your advice - from cable to personal real estate to cars - whatever. You never mention what the outcome is of any of these questions.

Oh, and do I look like a guy?

Good Luck.

p.s.
Buy the Honda.

Velvett, I'm sorry about the gender, I never pay attention to that. You made me feel special for the concerns about the outcomes. I chose the Honda!

Re: Re: Jag X-type

You dopey people and your car advice...Stick to llamas, people.

First of all, Nissan put lots of work into their engines, just as Honda and shared similar technology for years. Personally, I'd go for the lower mileage car. Remember, you can't roll back time. Nissan also put a microfinish on most of thier internal parts, making for an extremely durable engine, however, 100k is up there.

To pay for a high mileage vehicle just because it's HONDA is simply ludicrous. GROW A BRAIN. Besides, Honda's reputation is based on people who don't know cars. It's a machine just as any other and will break--especially at 100,000 miles. At that mileage, you need to change most belts, including the timing chain/belt, replace the all the hoses since they'll be about ready to bust, and you're going to get stupid problems like alternator, radiator, heater core, starter, head gasket, exhuast leak, and whatever. Those of you who don't know shit about cars, back off. Stop giving advice if you don't know how to change a freakin tire.

I'm not saying go for Honda because of it's rep. but because it's 60,000 miles less. Common sense, dude!!!

In your shoes, I'd take the Honda over the Nissan. Better reliability and build quality (even if it costs more to run/service/get spare parts for)
