whats a "good" poundage DB to do seated shoulder press with?

I train w/ a maniac that presses the 120's x 6. His elbows feel very strange to say the least while spotting him. Personally the 80's are my best x 5 w/ a spotter - I have a hard time getting them up.... w/out a spotter I like to hangout w/ the 65x6.

just curious, i hardly ever see anybody at my gym going heavy on it, ive been doing 80s in sets of 6.
I did the massive weight of 16.75 lb. last night and was quite happy, thank you very much ;)

130's for 7 is my best on seated DB presses
tough exercise..but they build up the delts like no tommorow
i just gotta recruit some dude to hand me one of the dumbells :coffee:

Next question

How many of those who do use 90's or better use back support while doing so?
Generally people do use a back support and they push thier back onto that support thius cheating the exersize. The back is now working the exersize because of cheating. I can push 225 with a barbell behind the neck without any back support simply my back is arched and I push the weight straight up. I can get maximum focus on the shoulders without cheating the exersize.

LOL. 25lbs is my max. I'm pushing for 30 this week. :)
I doubt if I'll ever get there  There's something wrong with my one shoulder, my chiro thinks it's got to do with degenerative discs around C6/7, I can barely do dumbbell laterals with my left arm, I'm talking 5 lbs. :worried: It's not the weight so much, but it hurts :(

Shoulder presses are a bit better, but my left arm will always be a bit weaker than my right. Working the shoulder girdle and keeping it strong helps me a lot. I've had my left arm go so bad I had to keep it in a sling.

Gotta agree I cheat when I`m pushing 100lbs+ dumbells but it works! makes my delts grow. Never understood how someone could focus on the delts without back support by the way! :) I`d cheat even more without back support and wont be able to sit straight while doing seated shoulder press.

I agree - once you get to a certain level a little cheating can actually be good (and if Ret ain't at that level no one is). Like Wulfgar said you gotta do some recruiting for a decent spotter which is a pain in the ass at my gym. My back bows w/ anything over 70lbs but I think I get better results doing at least 1 working set this way. Usually my first.

Those are the smart people who still are able to use their shoulders in every day life without saying "Ow Shit!" everytime they raise their arm up...:)

Seriously though, I am fairly certain that in my 8 years of BB workouts, I really screwed up my shoulders doing heavy DB and military pressing. I cannot answer the question as to how heavy one should go. I do know that shoulder day takes a longer time for me as I try to vary my workouts and hit all sides. Someone suggested to me to bring my elbows in somewhat when DB pressing to relieve pain. This has helped although it was not my normal way.

I know this didn't answer your question. I just am certain these were what did me in.

When my bodyweight was around 140 and lean during competing, I trained regularly with 50 - 60lb DBs and once went up to 70 (this was the killer I think). I used to military press 135. Now I weigh 119-121 and press around 30, so I guess you will have to see how it goes.

Why don't you try some giant sets if you are not so concerned about the weight, but the percentage of weight lifted over the entire exercise? Start with a set of 4 DBs in various sizes and use all four in one drop set. Example:

50's - 1x - 6r
40's - 1x - 8r
25's - 1x - 10r
15's - 1x - 12r

Then next time do it in reverse starting with the 15's. Don't do this every week though, just one every 3rd - 4th time.

:)
