what's a decent mountain bike...

You really dont need to spend the money on a Trek if its just for tooling around the city. Mine is a Diamondback and it was only $200 or so but i think it was on sale.

For a box bike, Specialized are doing pretty good these days. I got my setup for 500 but i kinda wish i had got a coustom job because most oem suspensions don't support heavy weight.

Trek 820 Mountain Track, get some road tires for it and you are set.

Excellent, Excellent bike.

under 300 dollars too

I like GT's avalanche liine. I have a 2.0, "howeve" you don't need that. just get something simple. hell, even something from wal-mart will work if you aren't going to get serious.

eww, puke. steel frame is a big no no.

cannondale make the best mountain bikes around. great componetry, super lightweight, great welds on the frame, alum frame or better.

any cannondale mtn bike you should like but if you are just interested in riding in the city, you might want try a hybrid bike. same geometry of a mountain bike but thinner tires (usually 42C) and somtimes angled handlebars to be more upright. Cannondale Road Warrior 600 is a good choice or even better would be a Cannondale Bad Boy with the road tire option. it's cool cuz you can switch between road or mountain tire because the rearstay and forks are wide enough to fit either.

get something with full suspension, musch nicer ride than a rigid
oh dear god, what did i just read?! wtf, you have no idea what you talking about do you? yes it is more "comfortable" but they are so many more drawbacks to full suspension that it should never be an option. he is riding around the city!!!! if you're jumping 10 foot drops, complex mountain rides, then yes. anything else, then NO.

Yep.

Whats your budget?
Treks aluminum frame mtn bikes start at 270 bucks. Ive got a 4300 and 4500 series. I ride in town and hit a trail every now and then and it does great.

Cannondale is known to make great bikes. Never priced one,are they expensive?
you get what you pay for. they tend to be more expensive but it is worth it. a low end model would be like 400-450 but it is as good as a trek 4900 which costs 90-100 dollars more. the road warrior 600 and bad boy are $720.

I got a Windcheetah last summer, I am now 'bent for life.

I didnt say 7" travel front and rear did I? u obviously dont know what you are talking about.. sorry but your standard full suspension bike wouldnt handle a 10' drop without blowing out the piston seal, only a down hill FS bike is built for that and u can expect to pay 1,500-4,000 for one. How do I know? I happen to own a specialized FSR team down hill, full hydraulic disks. With that said, u obviously havent ridden a full rigid and then ridden a FS, you wouldnt go back. He can get a decent FS 3-4" standard travel for $300-400

i'd say i'm looking to spend less than 500 bucks :)

defintely don't want a steel frame.

i've never ridden a full suspension either...

I'll check out the Treks and cannondales

thanks orbs

Sasquatchbox,

Do you get the Want Ad Press down by you? If so, get a copy that sells bikes, there are normally some pretty good deals in there. There's 2 editions, one for cars and the other for, well....others.

i dunno....do they usually have it at gas stations and stuff?

could someone please enlighten me on what's so wrong with a steel framed bike?

This should be fun

they are heavy, no?

i'm not up on bike technology, but I thought chro-moly and aluminum were a lot lighter.

I have a "Giant" bike", pretty good all around bike.

I would'nt worry to much about the full suspension unless you're really going to get into actual offroad biking.

I'ts just added cost that you might never use. Mine has shocks on the front only (I didn't want to spend a ton either) and it's been more than fine.

Steel is heavier than aluminum and it rusts too. Almost all choices are aluminum these days. Some might say steel has a smoother ride than aluminum but it's not a big deal.

Great choices would be the Specialized Rockhopper and Cannondale F300. Giant and Trek make good stuff too. Cannondale frames are all American made, for what it's worth.

Here is an old Pic that I dug up of From Zero and JB right before one of their Biking adventures up in the North East.

From Zero is the one in the Yellow Polo sittin on the fence.

lmao....might be out of my price range

Yeah, but with the included Book Bag - you can sell the WRX and take this fly ride to work. Beotch. You gottsa to be thinking if you wanna be a PLAYA....

OR... you and ForSkin Zorro can sell both your rides and go in on this little gem. You can ride up front to keep the sun of your fair skin (it has an umbrella up there for ya, but I don't get how that works at speed to tell you the truth).

The bonus is the dual peddle positions available to you as the front rider.... think about how geigh you can look with your feet proped way up in the friggin air riding to work with the umbrella protecting you from the sun. If BigDawg ever comes to visit you can give him the front so he can sip on a Cosmo...

I do know what i am talking about. I have worked in a high-end bike shop for the past three years i downhill slalom raced for 2 years, completed two endurance races, and i road race currently. I own a Cannondale Scalpel 3000, before that i had a Cannondale Jekyll 2000, before that i had a schwinn homegrown, the first carbon fiber frame built by schwinn. In road bikes i just sold my Lemond tete ti course and i'm getting a trek signature series madone 5.9 (exact same bike Lance uses). So i have had plenty of experience with bikes. cycling is a big part of my life and it ticks me off that you make the assumption that i dont know what i am talking about.
FSs are amazing bikes but not the best idea for all situations. if he is riding around the city he would perfer a HT because you getter a better pedal response and the increased rigidity will give him a better feel of the bike and the terrain. also, price is an option for him. you can spend 700bucks on a HT and get an amazing bike but 700bucks for a FS you will get a tank of a bike.
simplicity is best in this case. the more stuff you add to the bike the more weight is on the bike which doesnt need to be there.

Okay, jerky, you mentioned chromoly. That is steel. Chromium, Molybdenum, Iron.

With high fatigue and tensile strengths, it can be made light because it takes a lot less material. Aluminum alloys have made great progress as well, so at the moment, it is pretty much down to personal preference.

Steel rusts, yes, but that is why it is painted.

I reccommended that bike because it is the same as one of the bikes in my stable and I love it. I have a few bikes, but for cruising the roads and bike paths, it is my favorite. Lightweight, shifts smooth, stops on a dime and didn't cost much. Thus, is less likely to get stolen as well, not as big of a deal if it does. As compared to one of my more expensive bikes.

I have some years experience, working with a wide range of materials, from aluminum to carbon fiber. And I still hold 4130 (chro-moly) in very high regard.

best bet would be to go into a local bike shop that stocks the bike you want and get them to set you up and adjust it until you comfy

Trek 4100 is looking pretty good.....a local bike shop has em for 270 bucks....not bad. i'ma have to go check one out.

what size frame would i need being 6'1?

I have a Gary Fischer.....and the frame size is a large. I believe that is a 19 incher.....I bought mine at Sun and Ski Sports Annual Tent Sale....about 2 years ago.....it has held up pretty well under my weight.....(of course this could be because I don't ride it) the only time that f'ckr sees the light of day is when my daughter makes me go riding with her........I've heard it all....."hey look, someone taught that gorilla how to ride a bike" or "hey big guy how often ya gotta put air in those tires"......I hate public parks.

Anyway the model is called the Tassajara.....and it was reasonable....at around $500.00 smackers.....the little oily haired stoner bike monkey at the shop I got it at.....said it had decent components.....ie: Shimano Deore (sp) and other geigh stuf that I can't remember.......hope that helps. :)

well duh, theyre called granny bikes.

signature model is high steer with thumbs forward grip, a closed chainbox and rear wheel cover, the feminine style frame, big wheels.

They ride like choppers man. they are seriously comfortable unless you want to race.

In Holland bike theft is out of control. In Amsterdam there are like 600 k bicycles, and like 1.2 million bicycle thefts a year. So the average bike gets stolen twice. Its like an unwritten agreement with the hard drug junkies that they will leave our mothers and cars alone if we dont complain about them stealing bikes. This caused people to buy cheaper less hip bikes to be a less likely target, but then it became a trend and people think granny bikes are cool and they know how stupid people are who hurt their butt cycling in town on a mountain or racing bike. Also these things lend themselves perfectly for crazy paintjobs, their simplicity makes them more reliable, and you can have somebody ride with you sitting on the back.

No I dont work for the company.
