Ballmer: ''Full Guns'' on iPad is ''Job One Urgency''
^*facepalm*^

3:00 PM - August 1, 2010 by Marcus Yam - source: Tom's Hardware US

Windows 7 tablets to be Intel-based, not ARM, and they will print.

It's no great secret that Apple beat Microsoft (and basically everyone else) to the tablet market in the consumer space. Microsoft isn't happy about that.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that the company is hard at work in making a Windows-based tablet that'll go head-to-head against the iPad.

"They'll be shipping as soon as they are ready," Ballmer said. "It is job one urgency. No one is sleeping at the switch."

On the topic of Apple's success with the iPad, "they've sold certainly more than I'd like them to have sold."

While other companies are tuning special operating systems for its tablet devices, Microsoft is sticking with Windows 7.

"We have got to make things happen," he said. "We're in the process of doing that as we speak. We're working with our hardware partners. We're tuning Windows 7."

One nice side effect of having Windows 7 is that it'll be packed with features that many of us enjoy on our computers. "When you get your Windows 7 machine, it will print," Ballmer said. "Some people actually like to print every now and then."

Ballmer didn't comment when the tablets will be launching, other than "It ain't a long time from now." As for hardware, it'll be Intel-based rather than ARM.

"We're coming," he said. "We're coming full guns. The operating system is called Windows."

Woahoah yeah you better get right on that Microsoft! Especially now that it's, like, popular 'n shit. Because it'd be just asinine to ever try to beat Apple to the punch on something, just once, instead of the usual....

1. Let someone else create something
2. Point and laugh at it
3. Scramble to make your own when it gets mega popular
4. Throw billions into it until it can compete or
5. Scrap it if it can't

When will they learn they can't rely on this tactic anymore. I bet even Bill is starting to shake his head.

micfrosoft is panicking these days:

1) vista was a clusterfuck and companies are still slow to changeover to 7.
2) xbox 360 failures. and picking HD over blu-ray.
3) internet explorer = spyware central
4) apple making huge inroads on microsoft: iphone, ipad, ipod, macbook, mac desktop. none of which run windows.
5) more and more people focusing in on just web browsing. less and less need for windows.
6) fewer web developers using microsoft technology. the web is pretty much non-microsoft.
7) bing is a flop. just like microsoft missing out on the net.

their o/s is their bread and butter. without people needed windows - they are fucked. bye bye stock price. C'mon Gates didn't think he'd rule the world with shitty o/s's forever!

Apple is peaking on its current cycle right now. The funny part is Microsoft is just starting to follow them on this round.

But worry not... apple will rise again!

what have bene teh xbox failures?
i always liked xbox

Yeah, it's a little disappointing to see them fragmented like they are. But I don't see it as different as IBM back in the day.

Just mostly off of windows 7 didn't Microsoft have better quarter numbers than Apple? I'd love to have a tablet with a digitizer and a capacitive touchscreen. I have an ipad and a tablet PC right now, something to merge the two worlds would be amazingly functional. Motion slates just dont do it. 3/4G, bluetoof, wifi, and a little smaller than the ipad would be perfect IMO

I fear the red rings of death every time I turn on my XBOX. Luckily I haven't had a reason to turn it on in about a year.

I have both PS3 and XBOX 360 and the PS3 kicks the shit out of it in every way. Minus the on-line, but I don't play anything on-line so fuck those tards.

the majority of people play it for online now.. so i hear. that was the top reason people crossed over. ps3 is superior hardware for sure, but we all know that doesnt always make for a win.

i actually totally agree with you for once

and the online play isnt even that terrible with certain games anymore. like with madden and such or COD it's fine

Superior(if it even is)hardware means fuck all if it is so difficult to develop for.

I have all 3 systems...wii is fuckin kiddie garbage, even Sony(although not directly)has basically admitted to fucking up by making their own technology instead of using what developers are used to. The PS4 will not have "Cell" technology.

stop using fucked up overly hard to develop for hardware.

Redesign the controller..its terrible..just admit it already.

revamp the online play..its terrible..just admit it already.

mac rules!

+1
mbook pro is getting fixed, getting it later this week.
It broke a fall. Using windows 7 on a toshiba sateelite.
It's nice. Makes up totally for vista.

Still I miss the mac. That said, glad I'm not an Iphone user.

you don't like the iphone?

Speaking of microcrap. Just great, my toshiba windows 7 occassionally loses audio when playing back something. I have to go to services and reset audio service. Great operating system, can't even get reliable audio. Wonder if mac's have problems like this.

good thing pc's are cheap though google may change that with android netbooks.

had my imac 8-9 months now and have yet to have a single problem at all. Still as fast as the day i took it out of the box.

i would think x360 and related ventures are their strongest shit right now

Not by a long shot. Their games/devices division has actually been criticized as lagging too far behind their business software and even network software, lowering the bottom line too much for some investors' comfort. Windows 7 just passed 200 million licenses after only 9 months on the market. Even with all the price drops I don't think they've sold half that on Xbox and Xbox 360 combined in the last 9 years.

Xbox Live's community features/structure are why many think it's better. That plus a year head start is what saved them this gen. If it was really all that great though they'd be the ones getting Steam support, not PS3. Nobody ragged on the PS3 more than Gabe Newell. Nobody expected him to end up apologizing for it either, at E3 no less lol.

As for Cell tech, PS3 is still hacker free. If I was an investor something like that would influence me. The 360 is like the PC's younger brother when it comes to piracy. The PC-based developer-friendly tech in the 360 has also pretty much seen its best days already. They improve in some places, like textures, but other game assets have to be scaled back or struggle to run smoothly. Gears of War 2 was a good example. Same with Allen Wake. Meanwhile PS3 games keep on improving. Devs have been saying they've maxed out the Cell for a couple years now yet every exclusive someone makes they find ways to improve. Even multiplats like RAGE and Crysis 2 are reported as looking/running better on PS3 now. Although lot of that could also be attributed simply to better developers.

But yeah as soon as Kaz took over as head of SCEA the first thing he called for was developer input on the hardware side of things for the next system.

I dug Resistance 2 though Hansel.

I thought it was ok. It's funny because most people who loved the first one hated the 2nd. I did think the 2nd was kinda half assed as far as the campaign (lots of shit textures for instance, bland story, only a few decent weapons), but the MP was better in some respects. Insomniac is working on a new PS3 exclusive. Hopefully they learned to take more time with it this time lol.

I never played the 1st.

I am having trouble getting to the online play due to the shitty PS3 controller.

The layout blows and the analog sticks don't have enough tension resistance in them.

On the games subject...started playing Battle Field 2 MP and its a lot of fun(except for the shitty shitty controller.)with all the different stationary weapons and vehicles, its a lot funner than MW 2.

Yeah the sticks are close together but it's completely possible to dominate with them. The less tension is a good thing since when the sensitivity is cranked up it's easier to make smaller movements without wonky aiming from having to push harder. I guess it's a preference thing. When Move comes out shooters will be just point and pull the trigger.

Nimbus, you stuck in '07? lol.

The sensitivity can be cranked up and does help but there is a sense of "detachment" with the controls. I was playing BF 2 and when you move with the left stick it feels like you are floating or walking on ice instead of walking or running.

That would be due to the game's design ie animation, head bob, etc. For instance Killzone 2 feels like you're lugging gear around with every step, tip toe to full out run. When you jump in the light you can see your shadow heave up and down with the motion. Admittedly there is some input lag but is really only noticeable when you look for it. That's one of the main issues they've corrected for Killzone 3; making controls more CoD responsive yet retaining a sense of weight that makes the gameplay feel unique.

Probably varies from game to game..I noticed it with Resistance 2 also. when you stop if feels like you slide a tiny bit.

A highly underrated feature is the sound...I don't know if its the blu ray or what but BF 2 is the most impressive sounding game I have ever heard.

Do you have 7.1? Killzone 2's sound is the best I've heard on a console shooter. Punchy weapon sounds, plenty of ambient effects, explosions, soundtrack, etc.

No had to get rid of the 5.1 system...I have a 7 month old that grabs everything.

bought a Sony sound bar with sub woofer....actually sounds really good close to a 5.1 system.

Have you played BF 2?

The tanks,choppers,planes,etc...are nuts. a tank rolls by you and you hear the rumble(and feel it in the controller), it fires off its cannon BOOM.

Sounds good. I have heard it's a lot better than MW2.

Before I played it..I would have said no way.

But it really is a better game, sound, maps are above and beyond better, weapons, vehicles etc.

The times I have played their feels to be a lot more teamwork going on too.

Yeah it's supposed to be more balanced, ie noobs have to actually develop skill before they can dominate lol.
